Chapter 10 - THE NEW BEGINNING

Six months later, the spring flowers were blooming across the public elementary school yard on Elm Street.

The morning sun cast a warm, golden glow over the sidewalk where Dawson Parker had first parked his black Audi. But today, there was no crying little girl sitting alone on the curb.

Instead, the black Audi pulled up smoothly to the curb, and the engine purred to a quiet stop.

The passenger door opened, and out stepped a nine-year-old girl with bright blonde hair, wearing a brand-new backpack without a single patched seam. But she wasn't alone.

Holding her hand on the left was Elena—no longer wearing a faded gray sweatshirt and exhausted eyes, but a bright, cheerful floral dress, her face glowing with health and happiness.

And holding her hand on the right was Dawson Parker—dressed in his usual sharp navy suit, but wearing a relaxed, genuine smile that had completely erased the cold, unapproachable lines from his face.

They walked across the asphalt together as a family.

As they approached the iron gates of the elementary school, the same teacher with the green cardigan stepped out to greet them.

"Good morning, Maisie! Good morning, Mr. Parker... Mrs. Parker," the teacher said with a knowing, warm grin.

Elena blushed slightly, her hand squeezing Dawson’s fingers as he looked down at her with infinite affection.

"Good morning," they replied in unison.

Maisie let go of their hands, turned around on the bottom step, and beamed at them with absolute radiance.

"See you this afternoon, Dad! See you, Mom!" she shouted happily before turning and running through the double doors into the bustling school hallway.

Dawson and Elena stood side by side on the steps, watching her disappear into the warmth of the building.

Elena leaned her head against Dawson’s shoulder, breathing in the fresh spring air. "You know, you're going to be late for your morning client meeting again."

Dawson looked down at her, wrapping his arm securely around her waist, pulling her close against his heart.

"Let them wait," Dawson smiled, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her blonde hair as the city around them buzzed with life, color, and infinite possibility. "I finally have somewhere I actually want to be."
