Chapter 8 - The Arrival of the Heir

On a crisp, sunny morning in late October, four weeks before her due date, Grace woke up with a sharp, localized pain in her lower abdomen.
She turned in the large bed and called out softly, “Sebastian?”
Within three seconds, the door burst open. Sebastian was already dressed in a crisp suit for an early morning conference call, but the moment he saw Grace sitting up, clutching her stomach, he dropped his tablet onto the floor.
“Grace? What’s wrong?” he asked, rushing to her side.
“My water just broke,” Grace whispered, a mixture of excitement and fear in her eyes. “It’s time.”
What followed was a whirlwind of frantic, loving care. Sebastian carried Grace down the stairs himself, refusing to let her walk a single step. He drove the armored car to Mercy Lake Children’s Hospital himself, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white, while Viktor cleared the traffic ahead with security escorts.
When they arrived at the hospital, the staff rushed Grace into the private delivery suite in the newly renovated maternity wing.
For fourteen hours, Grace endured intense, agonizing labor. Through every contraction, through every scream of pain, Sebastian never left her side. He stood beside her bed, letting her squeeze his hand until his fingers were numb. He wiped the cold sweat from her forehead with a damp cloth, whispered words of love and encouragement into her ear, and held her when she felt she couldn't go on.
“You are the strongest woman I have ever known,” Sebastian whispered, kissing her temple as she gasped for breath. “Just a little more, my love. I’m right here. I’m never leaving you.”
At 11:42 PM, as the autumn moon hung bright over Lake Michigan, a loud, healthy cry echoed through the delivery room.
“It’s a boy!” the doctor announced, smiling brightly as she held up a beautiful, vigorous newborn baby. “A healthy baby boy!”
Tears spilled instantly from Grace’s eyes as she sank back against the pillows, completely exhausted but filled with an overwhelming, transcendent joy.
The nurses wiped the baby quickly and wrapped him in a warm, blue fleece blanket before placing him directly onto Grace’s chest.
Grace looked down at her son. He had a mop of thick dark hair, delicate rosebud lips, and tiny fingers that immediately reached out and curled around her thumb.
Sebastian stood beside the bed, completely frozen once again. But this time, it was not the freeze of shock or guilt—it was the profound, awe-inspiring reverence of a man beholding a miracle.
“Sebastian,” Grace whispered weakly, looking up at him with radiant, tear-filled eyes. “Meet your son.”
Sebastian leaned over the bed. His large, scarred hand trembled uncontrollably as he reached down and gently touched the baby’s tiny cheek. The newborn let out a soft snuffle and turned his head toward Sebastian’s touch, his tiny fingers letting go of Grace’s thumb to latch onto Sebastian’s pinky finger.

The billionaire dropped to his knees beside the hospital bed, rested his forehead against Grace’s hand, and wept openly, his tears soaking the white hospital sheets.
“He’s beautiful,” Sebastian choked out, his chest expanding with a love so immense it felt as though his heart would burst. “He’s perfect, Grace. You gave me a miracle.”
