Chapter 7 - Healing the Fractured Trust

Grace looked down at the top of Sebastian’s dark head, feeling the warmth of his body and the genuine, desperate sorrow pouring from him.

She reached out her hand. Her fingers brushed through his dark, thick hair, resting gently on the nape of his neck.

Sebastian flinched slightly at her touch, as if he didn't believe he deserved even the slightest softness from her, but he leaned into her palm like a dying man reaching for water.

“Look at me, Sebastian,” Grace whispered.

He raised his head slowly. His dark eyes were bloodshot, filled with an unbearable agony of regret.

“You hurt me deeper than anyone ever has,” Grace said, her voice trembling with emotion. “When you tore that picture, you didn't just reject a baby. You rejected me. You made me feel like my love for you was a crime.”

“I know,” Sebastian whispered, a fresh tear tracking down his cheek. “I know, Grace.”

“Money cannot fix that, Sebastian,” she continued gently. “Expensive clothes, mansions, and bodyguards cannot erase the six months I spent crying myself to sleep, wondering how a man who held me so tenderly could turn into ice in a single second.”

“I know,” he repeated, his chest heaving. “Tell me what to do. Tell me how to fix it, and I will spend every day of the rest of my life doing it.”

Grace looked down at the taped ultrasound on the table. She picked it up, running her thumb over the clear tape holding the pieces together.

“You start by being honest,” Grace said softly. “Not just with me, but with yourself. You built a life out of fear, Sebastian. You surrounded yourself with guns, money, and walls because you were afraid of being vulnerable. If you want to be in this baby’s life—if you want to be in my life—those walls have to come down permanently.”

“They're down,” Sebastian vowed fiercely, grabbing her hand and pressing it against his heart. “They’re down, Grace. I don't care about the business, I don't care about the syndicate, I don't care about the money. I only care about you and our child. Teach me how to be the man you need.”

Grace looked into his eyes and saw the absolute truth shining there. The ruthless billionaire had surrendered completely.

“Okay,” Grace whispered, a soft, tearful smile finally breaking across her face. “We start over. Step by step.”

Over the next two months, Sebastian Rourke transformed his entire world.

He officially began dismantling his illegal operations, transferring his vast wealth into legitimate shipping lines, real estate developments, and charitable foundations. He donated fifty million dollars to Mercy Lake Children’s Hospital to build a state-of-the-art maternal and pediatric care center named The Grace Halley Wing.

He moved his primary office from his dark Chicago penthouse to the Lake Forest estate so he could be near Grace every single day. He attended every single doctor's appointment, standing beside her during ultrasounds, his hand holding hers tightly as they listened to the strong, rapid thudding of their baby’s heartbeat together.

He cooked breakfast for her in the mornings—learning how to make the chocolate chip pancakes she craved. He read books on newborn care, filling his study with guides on infant sleep schedules, breastfeeding support, and babyproofing.

Grace watched him change day by day. She saw the coldness melt out of his eyes, replaced by an attentive, fiercely protective warmth. He didn't push her for romance; he simply served her, cared for her, and loved her with a humble devotion that slowly healed every scar in her heart.
