Chapter 6 - The Trial

The courtroom was packed on the day of Jared’s criminal trial.

Jared sat at the defense table wearing a dull grey prison jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his head bowed. The months in custody had stripped away every ounce of his former swagger. Beside him sat a public defender—his high-priced legal team had walked away after his checks bounced due to the asset seizure.

Claudia sat in the second row of the gallery, wearing a plain black dress, stripped of her fine jewelry and expensive coats. She looked smaller, defeated, sitting alone as former friends and high-society acquaintances actively avoided sitting near her.

Sarah and I sat on the prosecution's side, holding hands. Lily was not required to testify; the combination of the paramedic's high-definition photographs, the medical reports, and the audio recording from my phone call with Marcus provided overwhelming, undeniable evidence.

The prosecutor, a sharp woman named Elena Rostova, stood before the jury and played the audio recording from that night.

The courtroom fell deathly silent as my voice rang through the speakers: “Jared just struck Lily across the face hard enough to knock her off her chair...”

Then came the audio from the background—Jared’s crude laugh, followed by Claudia’s chilling words: “That’s what spoiled brats deserve.”

Several jurors gasped. One woman on the jury covered her mouth in visible horror.

"The defense claims this was an isolated incident of domestic discipline," prosecutor Rostova stated turning to face the jury. "But what you just heard was not discipline. It was the casual, effortless cruelty of individuals who believed their wealth made them untouchable. They believed a ten-year-old child had no voice, no protection, and no rights inside their walls."

When it came time for the defense to present their case, the public defender barely offered a counter-argument. Jared declined to take the stand, knowing that prosecutor Rostova would tear his financial fraud and history of violent outbursts to pieces during cross-examination.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When they returned, the foreperson stood up and read the verdict in a firm voice: "On the count of felony child abuse and assault resulting in bodily harm, we find the defendant, Jared Vance, guilty."

Jared slumped forward, resting his forehead against the table. Claudia let out a weak sob, putting her hands over her face.

The judge didn't hesitate. "Given the violent nature of the attack on a defenseless child and the total lack of remorse displayed at the time of the offense, I sentence you, Jared Vance, to seven years in state prison, without the possibility of parole for the first four years."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to handcuff Jared and lead him away, he briefly looked back at me. There was no anger left in his eyes—only deep, desperate regret. But it was too late.
