Chapter 5 - Unraveling

Three days later, the cracks in Claudia’s golden fortress turned into a complete collapse.
The media had caught wind of the story. A prominent local businessman arrested for brutalizing his ten-year-old niece at a family dinner was precisely the kind of scandal the local news couldn't resist. Headlines splashed across the morning papers and local broadcasts: Prominent Logistics CEO Arrested for Child Assault; Financial Empire Under Investigation.
I was standing outside the county courthouse when Claudia’s limousine pulled up. She stepped out, surrounded by two high-priced defense lawyers. She looked aged, her polished appearance slipping. Her hair was slightly out of place, and the arrogant tilt of her chin was gone, replaced by a defensive, panicked glare as reporters swarmed her.
When she saw me standing near the steps, she broke away from her lawyers and marched straight toward me. Her security guards tried to hold her back, but she pushed through.
"Ryan!" she hissed, her voice trembling with fury. "Look at what you’ve done! You’ve ruined us! Jared’s company is bankrupt! The banks are repossessing the house! Is this what you wanted? To destroy my family over a minor domestic discipline issue?"
I didn't flinch. I stood tall, looking down at the woman who had terrorized my wife and daughter for years.
"A minor issue?" I asked, my voice echoing clearly for the reporters' microphones to catch. "Your son put a child in the hospital. You laughed and called her a brat. You didn't care about family, Claudia. You cared about control. And now you've lost both."
"He’s your brother-in-law!" she shouted, tears of rage springing to her eyes. "Sarah is my daughter! How can you stand there and watch us lose everything?"
"Sarah is my wife," I replied coldly. "And her loyalty lies with the family that protects her, not the family that abuses her. You built your life on fear and money, Claudia. Now you have neither."
One of her lawyers quickly stepped in, pulling her away before she could say anything else that might jeopardize her legal standing. "Mrs. Vance, please, do not speak to the press or the plaintiff."
As they hurried up the courthouse steps, Marcus walked up beside me, holding a tablet displaying a fresh financial document.
"The state prosecutor just finalized the indictment," Marcus informed me. "Jared's bail has been set at two million dollars, which he cannot pay because his accounts are frozen. His offshore creditors have also filed formal fraud claims against him. He isn't just going to trial, Ryan. He's going to prison."
"And Claudia?" I asked.

"Her assets are being liquidated to cover the fraudulent loans Jared took out using her signature. By the end of the month, she will be forced to sell the family estate just to pay her legal defense fees."
I looked up at the sky, feeling a long-overdue sense of relief. The monster under the bed wasn't scary anymore. It was just small, exposed, and helpless.
