Chapter 4 - The Reckoning Begins

By eight o'clock the following morning, the reality of what had transpired began to shatter the high-society world Claudia and Jared had built.

I sat at the kitchen table of our home, watching Lily sleep peacefully on the sofa downstairs under a warm blanket. Sarah was sitting across from me, sipping black coffee, her eyes red-rimmed but clear.

"I called my sister this morning," Sarah said quietly. "She told me Jared spent the night in a holding cell. He tried to resist when the officers served the protective order."

"He thought he was invincible," I replied. "He spent his whole life believing money buys immunity."

"It used to," Sarah admitted, looking down at her hands. "My mother always fixed things. When Jared destroyed a university hall during a party, she paid for it. When he crashed his first car while under the influence, she made the charges disappear. She taught us that our family was above the rules."

"Not anymore," I said.

The doorbell rang. It was Marcus Vance himself, wearing a tailored three-piece suit, holding a leather briefcase. I invited him in, and he offered a warm, empathetic nod to Sarah before taking a seat at our table.

"How is the young lady?" Marcus asked gently.

"She's sleeping," Sarah answered. "The doctor said the swelling will go down in a week, but the psychological impact..."

"We will address every aspect of this," Marcus assured her. He opened his briefcase and pulled out several thick folders. "Ryan, the information you gave me regarding Jared's operations was far more extensive than I initially realized. His logistics firm wasn't just losing money—he was using Claudia’s family trust as collateral for illegal high-yield loans from offshore creditors."

I nodded. As a senior forensic accountant, I had noticed irregularities in Claudia’s annual tax filings two months ago when she asked me to look over her accounts. I had tried to warn her privately back then, but she had dismissed me as a "glorified clerk" who didn't understand high finance. I had kept copies of all the ledger entries, waiting for the right moment to protect Sarah's inheritance from Jared's reckless greed.

"Because Jared committed the physical assault on Lily," Marcus continued, "we were able to execute an immediate emergency discovery order on his personal assets under the state's Victim Protection and Restitution Act. The court locked all his accounts two hours ago."

"What about Claudia?" Sarah asked, her voice steady despite the weight of the question.

"Your mother signed as a guarantor on three of Jared's primary loans," Marcus said gravely. "When the bank realized Jared’s accounts were frozen due to a criminal investigation, they issued an immediate call on the collateral. Claudia’s main estate, her holiday homes, and her personal accounts are currently under a frozen lien."

Sarah took a deep breath, taking in the magnitude of the fall. "She called me six times this morning. She left voicemails saying I was destroying the family."

"She destroyed it the moment she laughed when her granddaughter was struck," I said softly.

Marcus stood up, buttoning his jacket. "The formal arraignment for Jared is scheduled for tomorrow morning. The prosecutor is pursuing felony assault charges on a minor. Given the medical records and the paramedic’s notes, there is virtually zero chance he escapes an indictment. They will try to settle, Ryan. They will offer money."

"Tell them," I said, looking Marcus straight in the eyes, "that there isn't enough money in the world."
