Chapter 4 - The Retaliation

True to their arrogant nature, Patricia and Harold Whitman did not apologize. Instead, they took it as an act of war.
Three days after the disastrous birthday dinner, Daniel received a formal letter from his parents’ high-priced corporate attorney. It wasn't just a personal snub; it was an economic threat.
Daniel worked as a senior partner at a prestigious architectural firm—a firm that Harold Whitman had originally founded before handing over nominal control to senior board members. Though Daniel had earned every promotion and built his own portfolio of multi-million-dollar projects entirely on his own merit, Harold still held substantial leverage through legacy shares and influence within the board of directors.
The letter stated that the board was initiating a “review of senior management performance and loyalty,” heavily implying that Daniel’s position was now on the chopping block unless he “reconsidered his domestic arrangements and realigned with family expectations.”
Daniel walked into our home office that evening, holding the letter with a look of disgusted disbelief. He slammed it down on the desk.
“Can you believe this?” Daniel said, his voice shaking with restrained anger. “They aren't just attacking us personally; they’re trying to ruin my career to force me to crawl back to them.”
I read through the legal jargon, my stomach dropping. “They’re trying to starve us out. They think if you lose your job, you won’t have a choice but to bring us to heel.”
“They don’t know me at all,” Daniel said, his jaw set. “I built those commercial designs. I brought in half their corporate clients. If they want to play dirty, I’ll walk out tomorrow and take my clients with me. I have enough savings, and my reputation in this city speaks for itself.”
“You shouldn't have to give up your life’s work because of their toxic pride,” I murmured, resting my hand on his arm.
“I won't give it up. I’ll recreate it,” Daniel replied with fierce determination. “But there’s more. They also sent a copy to my ex-wife, Sarah.”
My head snapped up. “Sarah? What does she have to do with this?”
“They’re encouraging her to file an emergency petition for sole custody of Mason and Chloe, claiming that our household is ‘unstable, morally compromised, and hostile’ because of you and Lily,” Daniel explained, rubbing his temples. “Sarah called me five minutes ago, absolutely furious.”
“Furious at us?” I asked, bracing myself.
“Furious at them,” Daniel corrected, a faint smirk breaking through his stress. “Sarah might have her faults, and our marriage didn't work out, but she is a good mother. She hates my parents with a passion. She told my mother over the phone that if she ever tries to use Mason and Chloe as pawns in her sick game again, she’ll file a harassment restraining order.”
That was unexpected relief. If Sarah stood united with us against Patricia’s manipulation, the grandparents’ legal strategy would crumble in family court.

“So we have Sarah, Mason, Chloe, and each other,” I said, feeling a surge of warmth despite the corporate storm brewing around us. “We can handle whatever they throw at us.”
“We can,” Daniel agreed, pulling me into a tight embrace. “And we are going to make sure Lily never feels second-best again. In fact, I’m planning something special for her this weekend to show her exactly how much she means to this family.”
