Chapter 3 - The Aftermath and the Ultimatum

The drive back to our house was filled with a heavy, contemplative silence. Lily had fallen asleep in the back seat, her head resting comfortably against Chloe’s shoulder. Mason sat in the front passenger seat, staring out the window at the passing streetlights, his jaw still clenched.

When we arrived home, Daniel carried Lily upstairs to her bedroom, gently tucked her in, and kissed her forehead. He lingered there for a long time, whispering soft apologies to her sleeping form.

Downstairs, Mason and Chloe were sitting on the living room sofa. I walked in carrying a tray of hot chocolate, my heart still aching from the events of the evening.

“Thank you,” I said softly, setting the tray down on the coffee table. “What you both did back there... standing up for Lily... it means the world to me.”

Mason looked up, offering a small, mature smile. “We’re not kids anymore, Emma. Grandma and Grandpa have always been snobs. They thought they could control Dad’s life forever. But they crossed a massive line tonight. Dad has been miserable trying to please them for thirty-eight years, and it stops now.”

“Your dad loves you guys so much,” I said, sitting down across from them. “I was so proud of you.”

Daniel walked down the stairs, his face tired, the lines around his eyes deeper than usual. He sat down beside me, pulling me close and wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“Are the kids asleep?” I asked.

“Just checked on them. They’re exhausted,” Daniel replied. He looked at Mason and Chloe. “I’m sorry your birthday dinner turned into a disaster. That wasn’t fair to you.”

“Don’t apologize, Dad,” Chloe said earnestly. “You finally stood up to them. Everyone always walks on eggshells around Grandma and Grandpa because of their money and their status. It’s about time someone popped their bubble.”

Daniel sighed, running a hand through his hair. “They left me a dozen voicemails on the drive home. My phone hasn't stopped buzzing. They think I’m having a temporary mental lapse because of ‘outside influences.’”

“What are you going to do, Daniel?” I asked quietly.

Daniel straightened up, his eyes hardening with absolute resolve. “For years, I kept the peace. I let them make passive-aggressive comments, I tolerated their coldness toward Emma, and I hoped that if I was patient enough, they would eventually accept Lily as their own grandchild. But tonight proved they are incapable of love that doesn't come with conditions and blood purity tests.”

He pulled his phone out of his pocket, unlocked it, and pulled up a family group chat. Without hesitation, he typed out a message and hit send.

“What did you say?” I asked.

“I told them that until they issue a formal, sincere apology to Lily, to Emma, and to me, they are cut out of our lives completely. No holidays, no visits, no phone calls. And if they show up at our house, I’ll call the police for trespassing.”

The living room went dead silent. Cutting off wealthy, influential parents in their social circle was a massive step, but looking at Daniel’s face, there was no room for negotiation. He was done being the dutiful son to people who treated his family like dirt.
