Chapter 9 - A New Dawn
The following month, summer arrived in full bloom across the sprawling lawns of the Sterling estate. The gardens were vibrant with red roses and emerald green grass, echoing with the sound of children’s laughter.
We threw a grand celebration—not a corporate gala or a high-society networking event, but a simple, joyful garden party to celebrate Leo’s complete recovery and his seventh birthday.
Children from his new school ran across the lawn, playing tag and chasing bubbles. Clara stood by the refreshment table, handing out juice boxes and cookies with her signature warm smile, surrounded by parents who thanked her endlessly for being such a wonderful presence in Leo’s life.
I stood on the stone patio, holding a glass of sparkling cider, watching my son sprint across the grass with a brightly colored superhero cape tied around his neck. He looked so free, so full of life, completely untouched by the shadows of the past.
Marcus walked up beside me, holding a clipboard with final security audits. “All perimeter sensors are upgraded and fully operational, Mr. Sterling. The estate is secure.”
“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, clinking my glass gently against his notebook. “Take the rest of the week off. Spend time with your family.”
Marcus smiled, genuinely surprised. “Thank you, sir. I appreciate that.”
As Marcus walked away to join the festivities, I felt a small, warm hand slip into mine.
I looked down. Leo was standing beside me, looking up with his big, bright eyes, a smudge of chocolate cake smeared across his cheek.
“Daddy, can we fly my kite now?” he asked eagerly, pointing toward the open meadow behind the mansion.
I knelt down, wiping the chocolate smudge from his cheek with my thumb, feeling an indescribable peace settle deep into my soul.
