Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The name on the parchment hit me harder than any physical blow. Richard.
My late wife, Claire, had passed away three years ago in a tragic sailing accident off the coast of Maine. Her death had broken me, leaving me a single father to a three-year-old boy. In the aftermath, Richard—Claire’s only brother—had stepped in to help me stabilize my grief and manage a portion of Claire’s estate left to Leo.
For a time, we were close. But eighteen months ago, a bitter corporate dispute tore us apart. Richard had tried to push through a hostile acquisition of Sterling Enterprises using Claire’s trust fund shares. When I discovered the betrayal, I stripped him of his board seat, locked him out of the family trust, and cut all personal ties.
I had thought he was defeated. I never imagined he would target my son.
“How does Victoria fit into this?” I muttered, staring at the parchment as the pieces of a dark puzzle began snapping into place.
Clara folded her hands neatly over her apron. “Think about it, Mr. Sterling. When did Victoria appear in your life?”
“Six months after the fallout with Richard,” I recalled, my eyes widening. “They were introduced at a high-end charity auction by... by Richard’s lawyer.”
“She didn't just happen to charm you,” Clara said softly. “She was placed. A sleeper agent in your home, designed to isolate you, control the household, and slowly break down your son until you were too exhausted to notice what was happening right under your nose.”
My blood ran cold. I had trusted Victoria with everything. I had given her access to my mansion, my life, and my son. And all the while, she had been acting as Richard’s proxy, executing a slow-motion vendetta to destroy my family from the inside out.
“Marcus!” I shouted toward the doorway.
My head of security appeared instantly. “Yes, Mr. Sterling?”
“Get back to the west wing. Search Victoria’s phone, her laptop, her luggage. Look for any communication with Richard Vance. I want every text, every email, every financial transfer.”
“On it, sir,” Marcus said, his face hardening before he spun on his heel.
I turned back to Leo. The medical team had arrived, quietly wheeling in a portable gurney. They transferred my sleeping son gently onto it. Even in his sleep, Leo’s small hand twitched, reaching out blindly for something safe to hold. I rushed forward and gripped his tiny fingers, walking beside him all the way to the ambulance waiting outside the mansion gates.
“I’m going with him to the clinic,” I told Dr. Hayes, who was supervising the transport. “Clara, stay at the house. Make sure Marcus secures everything. I’ll be back as soon as Leo is settled.”

“Go, Mr. Sterling,” Clara said with a warm, steady nod. “Your son needs his father. Leave the house to me.”
As the ambulance sped through the quiet, rain-slicked streets of the city, my mind raced. The corporate war was over, but a darker, more personal war had just begun. And I was going to make sure Richard and Victoria paid for every single tear my son had shed.
