Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Years passed, and the scars of that dark winter faded into distant memory.
Sterling Enterprises continued to grow, becoming not just a symbol of corporate power, but a pioneer in charitable foundations supporting single-parent families and child welfare protection programs—a personal initiative I funded and dedicated entirely in Leo’s name.
Leo grew into a brilliant, kind-hearted, and extraordinarily athletic young man. He excelled in school, captained his middle school soccer team, and never, ever had another bad night of sleep. Whenever he looked back at those turbulent years, he didn't remember fear; he only remembered how fiercely his father had fought to bring the light back into his world.
Clara remained with us as a beloved member of our family until she peacefully retired to her coastal cottage, though she visited every Sunday for dinner, always bringing her famous homemade apple pie.
One warm autumn evening, when Leo was fourteen, we sat together on the back porch of the mansion, watching the golden sun dip below the tree line. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the sweet scent of pine and fallen leaves.
Leo looked over at me, holding a sketchpad where he had been drawing architectural designs for eco-friendly homes.
“Daddy?” he asked softly.
“Yeah, sport?” I replied, turning my head from my book.
“Do you ever look back at how things used to be and feel angry?”
I paused, looking out across the vast, peaceful lawn where the wind rustled softly through the emerald trees. I thought about the sleepless nights, the corporate betrayals, the dark pillow, and the terrifying moments of doubt.
Then I looked at my son—tall, confident, smiling, and completely safe.
I smiled, shaking my head.
“No, Leo,” I said, placing my arm around his shoulders and pulling him close. “I don’t feel angry at all. Because without the dark nights, I never would have learned how bright the morning could be. We made it through the storm together, son. And nothing in this world will ever take our peace away again.”

Leo smiled, leaning his head against my shoulder as we watched the stars begin to twinkle across the evening sky.
We had finally found our happily ever after.
