Chapter 6 - The Cavalry Arrives

"Police! Nobody move!" a booming voice echoed up through the floorboards, followed by the heavy thud of multiple pairs of tactical boots storming up the staircase.

Troy froze, his hand still suspended in the air. The color drained from his face—not the frightened pallor of a child, but the sickening realization of a cornered predator.

Before he could react, two police officers rounded the corner into the hallway, guns drawn and leveled squarely at his chest.

"Get on the ground! Do it now! Hands behind your head!" the lead officer roared, his voice leaving zero room for argument.

Troy slowly lowered his arm, casting one venomous, lingering glare at me before dropping heavily to his knees on the carpet, interlocking his fingers behind his neck. The officers swarmed him, slamming him forward and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency.

"Clear!" another officer shouted from the master bedroom down the hall.

I slumped back against the dresser, my legs suddenly turning to jelly as the adrenaline drained from my system, leaving a shivering, hollow shell in its wake.

"Auntie?"

A small voice pulled me back. Lily crawled out from under the desk, her eyes wide with tears, looking at the police officers and then at me. I pushed past the officers, dropping to my knees and pulling her tightly into my arms, burying my face in her curly hair as I sobbed tears of sheer relief.

"You're safe, sweetie. You're completely safe now," I choked out, holding her so tightly I thought my heart might burst.

Moments later, emergency medical technicians and a child protective services worker arrived, guiding us gently out of the toxic room and down the stairs. As we walked out the front door into the cool, cleansing afternoon air, another car pulled into the driveway.

It was Lily’s mother—my sister. And the look on her face told me she had no idea what kind of monster she had invited into their home.
