Chapter 2 - The Discovery in the Closet

The air in Lily’s room felt stale, smelling faintly of bleach and cheap artificial lavender, an obvious attempt to mask something darker. I stood frozen in the doorway, my hand still holding Lily’s small, cold fingers. She hid behind my leg, her face pressed against my thigh, refusing to look up.
"Stay right here by the door," I whispered, my voice barely steady. "Don't move an inch."
I inched forward across the pink carpet. The room was tidy—too tidy, like a museum exhibit rather than a child's bedroom. No toys were strewn about; no books lay open. It was sterile.
My eyes gravitated first to the closet. The louvered wooden door was pulled shut, but a thin strip of darkness separated it from the frame. I reached out, my fingers trembling as they wrapped around the porcelain knob. It was cold to the touch. With a slow, agonizing twist, I pulled it open.
At first, I saw nothing unusual. Just a row of small dresses, a stack of plastic bins, and a few pairs of shoes. But then, a faint, metallic scent hit my nostrils. I stepped closer, brushing past the hanging clothes, and pushed my hand against the back wall of the closet.
My palm didn't hit drywall. It hit something soft, yielding, and completely out of place.
I pushed harder. The back panel of the closet wasn't a wall at all—it was a heavy velvet curtain hung over a wide, gaping void. I pulled the curtain aside and gasped.
Hidden behind the closet was a secondary, narrow crawlspace stretching deep into the eaves of the house. Inside, there was no light, no furniture—only a small, stained mattress pad on the floor, a plastic jug of water, and a heavy iron chain bolted directly into the wooden floorboards with a padlock hanging open.
My stomach plummeted. This wasn't a punishment space; it was a cage. A place designed to lock a child away where no windows could let out her screams.
"Did you find it?" Lily’s small voice piped up from behind me, shaking with a terror that no seven-year-old should ever have to carry.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, stepping back out of the closet and forcing a brave face as I looked down at her. "Yes, sweetie. I see it."

"Now look at the wall," she whispered, pointing a trembling finger toward the corner near her white wooden bed.
I turned my gaze to the wall she had mentioned, and the second horror revealed itself.
