Chapter 9 - Building True Family

With the court case behind us, the dark cloud that had hung over my life for years completely dissipated. Winter returned, but this time, the snow felt magical instead of threatening.

The Blue Spruce Inn was decorated beautifully for the holidays. Luke and I spent hours hanging real pine garlands, twinkling white lights, and handmade ornaments. Lily, now nearly two years old, toddled around the lobby, her laughter ringing out like music. Her birthmark, which my mother had called an imperfection, was just a beautiful part of the little girl who brought so much light into the world.

On a quiet evening in mid-December, Luke asked me to come out to the pavilion behind the inn. The snow was falling softly, catching the light of the lanterns he had strung up.

When I walked out, I found a small table set with hot cocoa and a tiny, beautifully wrapped box.

Luke took my hands, his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the lights. "Clara, these past two years have been the best of my life. You and Lily showed me what a real home feels like. I want to protect that home forever."

He dropped to one knee, opening the box to reveal a simple, stunning emerald ring. "Will you marry me, Clara?"

Lily chose that exact moment to toddle out of the back door, bundled up in her pink snowsuit, calling out, "Mama! Dada!"

I laughed through my tears, scooping Lily up into my arms and reaching down to pull Luke up to his feet. "Yes," I said, kissing him deeply as Lily giggled between us. "Yes, we will."
