Chapter 7 - The Legal Battle

Just as life seemed perfectly peaceful, the final desperate gasp of my biological family reared its head. In October, I received a certified letter in the mail. My parents, desperate for a financial lifeline, were suing me for "filial support," claiming that because I had supported them financially for years, they had a legal right to my income in their old age.
It was a ridiculous, malicious attempt to drag me back down.
Luke sat with me at our kitchen table as I stared at the legal documents, feeling a familiar dread creeping back into my stomach. "They just won't let me go," I whispered.
"We fight it, Clara," Luke said firmly, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You have the bank statements. You have the text messages. You have the truth. They can't force you to carry them forever."
We hired a brilliant family lawyer named Marcus. When we met in his office, I handed over a neatly organized binder containing three years of bank transfers, the text messages from the "Christmas Fund" group chat, and records of their harassment.

Marcus looked over the documents and let out a low whistle. "They don't have a leg to stand on, Clara. This isn't a case of an adult child abandoning destitute parents. This is a clear case of financial exploitation and extortion. I’m going to counter-sue for a permanent restraining order."
The court date was set for early December. As the weeks ticked closer, I felt a strange sense of finality approaching. This wasn't just a legal battle; it was the formal closing of the book on my old life.
