Chapter 6 - New Foundations

By the time summer arrived, I had taken Luke up on his offer. What started as weekend visits to the Blue Spruce Inn to escape the city had evolved into something beautiful. Luke had become a steady, joyful presence in my life, and an absolute anchor for Lily.
He didn't just accept Lily; he adored her. He built a custom wooden swing set for her in the inn's backyard. He learned exactly how to make her laugh when she was teething. And when people looked at her birthmark in public, Luke would wrap his arm around my waist and smile proudly, making sure the world knew we were together, and we were whole.
One warm July evening, after the tavern had quieted down, Luke and I sat on the back porch watching the fireflies dance across the lawn. Lily was fast asleep upstairs.
"I've been thinking," Luke said, taking my hand in his. His palm was rough from woodwork, but his touch was incredibly gentle. "The inn is doing great, but it's too big for just me. And honestly, this place feels empty whenever you and Lily go back to the city."
My heart skipped a beat. "Luke..."
"Move in with me, Clara," he said, looking at me with total sincerity. "Let’s build a life here. A real one. No hidden agendas, no expectations. Just us."

Tears pricked my eyes, but for the first time in years, they were tears of pure joy. "Yes," I whispered, leaning in as he kissed me. "A thousand times, yes."
Within a month, I gave notice at my apartment. I kept my remote consulting job, setting up a beautiful sunlit office overlooking the mountains. I was finally building a home on solid ground, far away from the shifting sands of my past.
