Chapter 6 - Reconciliation in the Rain

Inside, the air smelled of rust, oil, and gunpowder. Two men were handcuffed on the floor, surrounded by officers. In the corner, sitting on a wooden crate, was Sarah.

She was barely recognizable. Her face was bruised, her clothes torn, and she was shivering violently under a wool blanket an officer had wrapped around her. When she looked up and saw me approaching, her eyes filled with an overwhelming wave of shame and terror.

"David," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "The kids... are the kids..."

"They're safe," I said, stopping a few feet away from her. The anger I had felt for hours suddenly evaporated, replaced by a profound, heavy sadness. "Emma is in the hospital. She had a severe fever. Ethan saved her. They were alone for three days, Sarah."

A choked sob tore from her throat, and she buried her face in her hands, her body shaking violently. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, David. I didn't want this. They threatened to hurt them. They said if I called you, or the police, they’d go to the school... I thought if I went with them, if I paid them the last of the money, they’d leave us alone. But they trapped me."

I knelt in front of her, gently pulling her hands away from her face. "Why didn't you just tell me? Before it got this bad? Two years ago, when we divorced... why didn't you just ask for help?"

"Because I was ashamed," she wept, looking into my eyes. "You were so perfect. So successful. I felt like a failure next to you. And the gambling... it started as a way to make my own money, to feel independent. Then I lost everything. I thought if you found out, you’d take the kids away forever and I’d have nothing left."

"I would have helped you, Sarah. For the sake of our family, I would have helped you," I said softly.

Paramedics arrived, wheeling a stretcher toward us. As they gently lifted her up, Sarah grabbed my sleeve, her grip surprisingly tight. "Please, David. Don't let them hate me. Please take care of them."

"They don't hate you," I said, squeezing her hand. "And they are taken care of. I promise."

As they wheeled her away, Detective Miller walked up beside me. "She’s going to face charges, David. Embezzlement conspiracy, child endangerment. Even if she was coerced, she broke the law."

"I know," I said, watching the ambulance doors close. "But right now, she needs to heal. And I have to be a father."
