Chapter 4 - Into the Shadows

We arrived at the Vance Enterprises skyscraper just as the sun was beginning to set, casting long, bloody shadows across the glass facade. I had left Ethan and Emma under the watchful eye of a trusted family nanny and two plainclothes police officers at the hospital.
The security guard at the front desk looked surprised to see me back so soon, especially accompanied by two detectives. "Mr. Vance? Back early?"
"Is Arthur still upstairs?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
"Yes, sir. He said he was working late to finish the quarterly audit."
"Good."
We took the private elevator straight to the executive penthouse. The silence of the empty office floor was deafening. My footsteps echoed on the marble as I walked toward Arthur’s corner office. The frosted glass door was slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling out onto the floor.
I pushed the door open. Arthur was at his desk, frantically stuffing documents into a leather briefcase.
He froze, looking up. When he saw me, and then saw the detectives behind me, the color drained from his face. "David. I thought... I thought you were at the hospital."
"You knew?" I walked in, slamming my hands down on his desk. "You knew they were at the hospital? How did you know that, Arthur? I haven't told anyone from the office."
Arthur stumbled backward, his chair catching on the carpet. "I... I heard it on the police scanner. David, listen to me, it's not what it looks like."
"Where is Sarah?" I demanded, my voice booming through the empty office. "What did you do to her? Why were my kids left to starve for three days?!"
Arthur sank into his chair, covering his face with his hands. He began to sob, a pathetic, trembling sound. "I didn't mean for this to happen. I swear to you, David. She forced my hand."
Detective Miller stepped forward, placing a hand on Arthur’s shoulder. "Arthur Pendelton, you need to come with us. And you better start talking."
As Miller read him his rights, Arthur looked up at me, his eyes wide with genuine terror. "David, you don't understand. It’s not just me. She was working with people you don't want to cross. Loan sharks. She had a gambling debt, David. A massive one from before the divorce. That's why she wanted the money. If she didn't pay them, they were going to kill her. And when I stopped the transfers last week because the internal auditors were getting close... they came for her."

My blood ran cold. "The house. The struggle."
"They took her, David," Arthur whispered. "And they don't care about the kids."
