Chapter 5 - The Safe House

The revelation that Sarah had been abducted by dangerous creditors sent the investigation into overdrive. Arthur was taken to the precinct, where he immediately began singing to the prosecutors in exchange for a plea deal. He gave up the names, the account numbers, and most importantly, the location of a warehouse near the docks where he had previously met Sarah’s extortionists.

I refused to go home. I sat in the precinct bullpen, drinking terrible coffee, staring at the clock. It was midnight.

Detective Miller walked out of the interrogation room, wiping his brow. "We’ve got a location. SWAT is mobilizing now. We’re going to breach the warehouse."

"I'm coming," I said, standing up.

"Absolutely not, Mr. Vance. This is a high-risk tactical operation."

"Those people left my children to die, and they have the mother of my kids," I said, stepping into his space, my voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "I am not sitting in this room while you decide their fate. I’ll stay in the car. But I’m coming."

Miller stared at me for a long moment, seeing the unbreakable resolve in my eyes. He sighed. "Fine. You stay in the perimeter vehicle. You wear a vest. If you take one step out of that car before I say so, I’ll have you arrested for obstruction."

Thirty minutes later, a convoy of unmarked black SUVs tore through the industrial district, arriving at a derelict shipping warehouse near the dark, churning waters of the harbor. The rain had started to fall, a heavy, driving downpour that blurred the flashing blue lights of the police cruisers blockading the area.

I sat in the back of the command SUV, my heart hammering against my ribs as I watched the SWAT team, dressed in full tactical gear, approach the rusted side door of the warehouse.

"Breaching in three... two... one..." the radio crackled.

A loud BANG echoed through the night as the door was blown off its hinges. Flashbangs detonated inside, casting strobing white light through the grimy windows. Gunfire erupted—short, sharp bursts that made my stomach twist into knots.

"Suspect down! Secure the perimeter!" a voice yelled through the comms.

Minutes passed like agonizing hours. Then, Miller’s voice came through. "We have the victim. She’s alive. Need a medic, now!"

I didn't wait for Miller’s permission. I threw open the SUV door and ran through the pouring rain, splashing through deep puddles until I burst into the dimly lit, cavernous warehouse.
