Six months after that fateful night, the legal chapter of our past finally drew to a permanent close.
The federal trial against Daniel Carter was swift and decisive. With the ICU communication recording playing in the courtroom—capturing his chilling admission that Vanessa was "worth more than that little girl"—alongside the comprehensive financial audit and Vanessa’s damning testimony against him, the jury reached a verdict in less than two hours.
Guilty on all counts of grand larceny, pharmaceutical fraud, and reckless endangerment.
The judge didn't hold back during sentencing. He condemned Daniel’s actions as an egregious betrayal of public trust and parental duty, handing down a sentence of six years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for the first three. Furthermore, Daniel’s pharmacy license was permanently revoked across all fifty states, ensuring he could never touch medical inventory or practice healthcare again.
I didn't attend the trial. I didn't need to see him, hear his excuses, or watch him realize the full extent of his self-destruction. I was too busy living my life.
On the evening of the sentencing, I took Lily out to her favorite restaurant to celebrate her ninth birthday—her first healthy, joyful birthday in years.
We sat at a cozy booth by the window, sharing a massive chocolate fudge cake piled high with candles. Lily blew them out in one mighty breath, her face glowing with pure happiness as the restaurant staff and I applauded.
"What did you wish for, sweetie?" I asked, wiping a smudge of frosting off her cheek.
Lily grinned brightly, her eyes sparkling. "I wished that we stay happy like this forever, and that we never, ever have to look back."
My heart swelled, a lump forming in my throat as I pulled her into a tight, loving hug.
