Chapter 2 - The Emergency Intervention

Chaos erupted inside the sterile ICU room. The steady, rhythmic green line on Lily’s heart monitor fractured into erratic spikes before flattening into a warning tone. Dr. Bennett shoved past the nurse, his face draining of all color as he slammed his palms against Lily’s small chest.
"Code blue, room four hundred and twelve! I need epinephrine, now!" Dr. Bennett barked, his voice cutting through the rising tide of panic.
My breath caught in my throat. The world tilted sideways, the white walls blurring into a sickening smear of fluorescent light. I tried to step forward, to reach for Lily's hand, but a pair of strong hands gently pulled me back. It was Nurse Clara, her eyes swimming with unshed tears.
"Let the doctors work, Emily. You need to stay out of their way," she whispered, guiding me toward the corner of the room.
Through the blur of medical personnel swarming the bed, I stared at the phone lying abandoned on the metal tray beside the monitor. The speaker was still live. Daniel’s voice drifted out into the tense air of the room, muffled and panicked.
"Hello? Dr. Bennett? What’s going on? Is she... is she okay?" Daniel stammered, the cold arrogance from moments before completely stripped away.
Dr. Bennett didn’t stop chest compressions. He threw a furious glance toward the phone, sweat beading on his forehead.
"Your daughter is dying, Mr. Carter," Dr. Bennett shouted over the din of the alarms. "Because you chose to play god with hospital inventory! If she doesn't get her dose within the next two minutes, you won't just be facing a disciplinary hearing—you'll be planning a funeral."
"I... I can bring it back!" Daniel's voice cracked, high-pitched and frantic. "Vanessa hasn't taken it yet! It's still in the cold box in her apartment! I can drive it back right now!"
Hearing those words, something inside me snapped. The grief and terror that had paralyzed me moments ago hardened into a cold, unbreakable resolve. Daniel wasn't just a careless husband anymore; he was a monster willing to sacrifice his own flesh and blood for his mistress.
I stepped forward, picked up the phone, and brought it to my ear.
"Don't bother, Daniel," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
"Emily! Listen to me, I made a mistake, I—"
"You made your choice," I interrupted coldly. "You said Vanessa is worth more than our daughter. Well, enjoy your life with her. Because by the time you walk through those hospital doors, your career, your freedom, and everything you think you own will belong to me."
I ended the call before he could say another word, and tossed the phone onto the floor, crushing it beneath the heel of my shoe.
At that exact second, Dr. Bennett delivered a final, synchronized push, and the monitor emitted a stuttering, miraculous beep.
"We have a pulse!" Nurse Clara yelled, injecting a temporary stabilizing agent into Lily’s IV line. "Her vitals are stabilizing, but it's critical. She needs the real medication immediately!"
Dr. Bennett straightened up, wiping his brow with the back of his sleeve. He looked at me with deep urgency. "Mrs. Carter, where can we get another dose right now? St. Matthew's main pharmacy is locked until morning, and Daniel controls the secondary vault."

I looked down at Lily, whose breathing was shallow but steady, and felt a cold fire ignite in my chest. Daniel thought he was the only one who understood the hospital's network. He had forgotten who had spent the last ten years organizing his research, managing his professional contacts, and quietly keeping track of every single asset he owned.
"Dr. Bennett," I said, my voice steady as a rock. "Call hospital security and the director of compliance. I know exactly where Daniel keeps his master override keys—and I know every single illegal transaction he’s made over the last three years."
