Chapter 5 - Fallout and Realizations

With Daniel locked in the back of a police cruiser and processing through the municipal detention center, the heavy weight of the night began to settle deep into my bones. But I didn't have time to collapse. My priority was, and always would be, Lily.

I walked back into the ICU room. Lily was resting peacefully now, color slowly returning to her cheeks thanks to the emergency dose Dr. Bennett had managed to secure from an auxiliary hospital supply stash while Daniel was being detained.

Dr. Bennett was sitting in a chair beside the bed, reviewing her latest chart. He looked up as I entered, offering a warm, reassuring smile.

"Her heart rate is stabilizing, and her inflammation markers are dropping right on schedule, Emily," Dr. Bennett said gently. "She’s going to make it."

Hearing those words felt like a boulder being lifted off my chest. Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, but this time, they were tears of pure relief. I walked over to the bed, gently stroked Lily’s soft hair, and kissed her forehead.

"Thank you, Doctor. Thank you for everything," I whispered.

"Don't thank me. Thank your own quick thinking," Dr. Bennett replied, standing up and patting my shoulder. "Get some rest, Emily. Nurse Clara and I will keep a close eye on her for the rest of the night. You have a very big day ahead of you tomorrow."

He was right. Taking down Daniel at the hospital was only the first step. Daniel had controlled our finances, our assets, and our home. Now that he was behind bars facing federal felony charges, the legal and financial reality of our lives was about to crash down around us—and I needed to be ready.

By 8:00 AM, I was seated across the desk from Sarah Jenkins, one of the top family law and corporate asset attorneys in the city, recommended directly by Director Harrison.

Office sunlight streamed through the high-rise windows, but the room felt intensely focused. Sarah was paging through the digital dossier I had compiled overnight, her eyebrows steadily rising higher with every document she reviewed.

"Well, Mrs. Carter," Sarah said, looking up over her designer frames with a look of profound respect. "I must say, in all my years of practice, I have rarely seen a client come to an initial consultation this thoroughly prepared."

"Daniel thought he was the smart one in the marriage," I replied evenly, resting my hands on the desk. "He hid assets, set up secondary accounts, and diverted hospital resources. But he made all those transactions using our shared domestic infrastructure and hospital network credentials. I have every single paper trail."

Sarah nodded approvingly, leaning forward. "This changes everything in our favor. Because of the criminal nature of his actions—stealing life-saving medication from a pediatric patient to fund an extramarital affair—we can file for an emergency asset freeze and an expedited divorce on grounds of gross misconduct and endangerment."

"What about our house and my custody rights?" I asked.

"Absolute sole custody," Sarah stated firmly. "Given his actions tonight, no family court judge in their right mind would grant Daniel unsupervised visitation, let alone shared custody. As for the house and joint accounts, because he used marital funds to support his mistress and committed a federal crime using his professional position, we can petition the court for a disproportionate asset split in your favor. In short, Emily—he will lose everything."

"Good," I said, a cold resolve settling into my voice. "Let’s start filing immediately."

Little did I know, Daniel’s world was about to get even smaller. Just as Sarah reached for her phone to call the court clerk, her assistant burst through the office door, holding a tablet with wide eyes.

"Ms. Jenkins! You need to see this. The fallout from St. Matthew's Hospital just hit the morning news cycle—and Daniel Carter's mistress has just made a very public move."
