Chapter 7 - The New Dawn

The delivery room was filled with the soft, steady beep of fetal monitors and the calm, reassuring voices of a top-tier medical team—secured, of course, by my newly established trust fund.

Lily stood right beside my head, holding a damp cloth to my forehead and whispering words of encouragement through my final pushes.

“One more big push, Vanessa! You’re doing amazing!” Dr. Evans cheered, her eyes crinkling with professional warmth behind her surgical mask.

With a final surge of strength, gripping Lily’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white, I pushed through the exhaustion and pain.

Waaah!

The sharp, healthy, resounding cry of a newborn baby filled the sterile room, cutting through the tension like sunlight breaking through storm clouds.

Dr. Evans immediately scooped up the tiny, squirming bundle, wrapped him in a warm flannel blanket, and lifted him over the surgical drape.

“Congratulations, Mrs. Calloway. You have a healthy, beautiful baby boy.”

Tears streamed hot and fast down my cheeks as they placed him directly onto my chest. He was tiny, perfect, with a tuft of dark hair and fists clenched tightly against the air. He let out another healthy squawk before nuzzling instinctively against my skin.

“Hi, Hunter,” I sobbed, kissing the top of his damp head as Lily wept openly beside me. “Hi, my sweet boy. It’s just you and me now. And we are going to be okay. More than okay.”

For the first time in my life, I felt completely weightless. The ghosts of the Calloway family, the trauma of the baby shower, the abuse, the betrayal—it all dissolved into the rhythmic, powerful heartbeat of the tiny life resting against my heart.
