Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Titans

Three weeks later, the federal holding facility was a far cry from the opulent country clubs Charles Calloway used to frequent.

Sitting behind thick, reinforced ballistic glass in the visitor’s booth, Charles looked ten years older. His silver hair was uncombed, his posture broken, and the tailored Brioni suit had been replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his shrinking frame.

When the heavy steel door clicked open and I walked into the visitation room, leaning slightly against a nurse’s aid while wearing a simple cream-colored maternity dress, Charles’s eyes bulged with primal rage.

He threw himself against the glass, his handcuffed wrists banging loudly against the metal partition.

“You!” Charles screamed, his voice muffled through the intercom speaker. “You treacherous little leech! You planned this! All of it!”

I calmly took a seat on the plastic stool on my side of the glass, lifting the heavy black telephone receiver to my ear. I waited a beat, watching him seethe, before speaking into the mic.

“Good afternoon, Charles. I hope the accommodations are meeting your standards,” I said, my voice sweet and unbothered.

“You destroyed us!” he rasped, his face purple with fury. “Four generations of Calloway legacy! Gone! Wiped out in a single afternoon! Ryan is crying in his cell like a coward! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”

“I know exactly what I’ve done, Charles,” I replied steadily. “I took back what your family stole from hundreds of honest working people, and more importantly, I ensured my son will never have to look into the eyes of a monster like you or your son.”

Charles slammed his fist against the glass one last time before slumping forward, defeated by the absolute realization of his helplessness. “What do you want, Vanessa? Money? Power? Name your price. We can sign over whatever is left—just call off your federal contacts. Please.”

I let out a quiet, cold laugh.

“I don't want your money, Charles. I already have it,” I said softly. “I came here today for one simple reason: to watch you understand that your empire wasn't destroyed by the FBI, or by the IRS, or by corporate rivals.”

I leaned closer to the glass, my eyes locking onto his bloodshot pupils.

“It was destroyed by the quiet woman you thought you could trap, abuse, and discard.”

Before he could scream another curse, I hung up the phone, stood up, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back.
