Chapter 3 - The Shackles of Empire

“This is a mistake! A complete and utter outrage!” Charles Calloway’s voice shook the vaulted ceilings as federal agents swarmed the ballroom, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his manicured wrists. “You can't do this to me! I built this city!”

“You built it on shell companies in the Caymans and systemic embezzlement, Mr. Calloway,” Agent Vance replied smoothly, nodding to two agents who were already pressing Charles against a gilded pillar to read him his rights.

Ryan stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically from the agents to his father, and finally back to me. The invincible golden boy of Manhattan society looked like a cornered animal.

“Vanessa,” Ryan stammered, his arrogant facade completely shattered. The transformation was pathetic; his voice cracked, desperate and trembling. “Vanessa, baby… please. Tell them this is a joke. We’re married. We’re having a family. You don't mean this, right? You’re just upset about… about Savannah. I’ll send her away! Right now! Just tell these men to leave!”

Savannah let out a shrill shriek, dropping his arm as if he were suddenly coated in poison. “You said she was broke! You said she had no power! You said you could divorce her with nothing!” She lunged at Ryan, clawing at his designer suit. “You lied to me! You ruined me!”

“Shut up, you stupid bitch!” Ryan snarled, shoving her backward so hard she tripped over a floral arrangement and landed in a heap of shattered glass and orchids.

“That’s domestic assault in the presence of federal officers, Mr. Calloway,” Vance noted dryly, signaling for another set of cuffs. “Add that to the charge sheet.”

As Ryan was slammed onto the marble floor—the exact same spot where he had thrown me moments earlier—I felt a grim, vindictive satisfaction warm my chest. The pain in my stomach was still there, sharp and warning, but my focus remained razor-sharp.

My younger sister Lily helped me shift into a seated position against the base of the gift table, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and awe. “Nessa… oh my god. What did you do? How did you pull this off while heavily pregnant?”

“They thought I was weak, Lily,” I whispered, taking deep, measured breaths as the distant sound of approaching ambulance sirens wailed through the afternoon air. “Pregnancy makes people blind. They assume your mind turns to mush, that you’re only focused on nursery colors and baby showers. They never suspected that every time Ryan stayed late at the office with his ‘board members,’ he was actually forwarding encrypted files straight to my encrypted terminal.”

Charles was hauled past me, his face purple with rage. He glared down at me, spittle flying from his lips. “You bitch! You ungrateful little parasite! We took you in!”

“No, Charles,” I corrected him softly, looking him dead in the eye. “You brought a wolf into your hen house, thinking she was a lamb. And now, the bill has come due.”

Agent Vance knelt beside me again, gently checking my pulse. “The ambulance is at the gates, Mrs. Calloway. We need to get you to the hospital immediately. Don't worry about the evidence; our digital forensics team seized every server in the Calloway Tower twenty minutes ago. Their accounts are frozen globally. Not a single penny remains.”

“Thank you, Agent Vance,” I murmured, letting Lily help me stand.

As the federal agents escorted the Calloway men out into the blinding sunlight, flashbulbs from paparazzi—tipped off by my anonymous media contacts—erupted outside the wrought-iron gates. The invincible dynasty had crumbled in less than ten minutes.
