Chapter 9 - Retribution

Six months after the trial, the world had moved on, but the healing had just begun.

Harrow Manor was formally acquired by the city through a court forfeiture sale. Under my direction, the grand mansion—once a symbol of greed and domestic violence—was completely demolished.

I stood at the edge of the property on a crisp autumn morning, watching the giant yellow wrecking cranes swing heavy iron balls into the stone walls. The grand staircase where I had fallen tumbled down into a cloud of white dust and gray rubble.

"It feels strange seeing it come down?" Nina asked, standing beside me with two hot cups of decaf cider.

"No," I said, watching a stone pillar crumble. "It feels like breathing fresh air for the first time in my life. That house was built on secrets. It needed to fall."

In its place, the property was being redeveloped into the Victoria Vance Memorial Park & Family Center—a safe haven for women and children seeking shelter, legal assistance, and medical support.

Later that afternoon, I received a package in the mail at my newly renovated apartment in the quiet, tree-lined suburbs. It was a letter from the state department of corrections.

Arthur had attempted to appeal his sentence twice, but both appeals were summarily dismissed by the appellate court. Tessa had been transferred to a medium-security facility after multiple behavioral infractions, while Blake’s family had officially declared bankruptcy due to civil lawsuits filed by the victims of their corporate schemes.

Justice was complete, thorough, and absolute.

That evening, as I sat in the nursery painting a mural of golden sunflowers on the wall, I felt a sharp, sudden kick against my ribs.

I dropped my paintbrush and gasped, smiling through warm tears.

"Someone’s getting eager," Dr. Levin’s voice echoed in my memory.

May you like

I walked over to the armchair by the window, sitting down as the golden sunset bathed the room in warm, glowing light. The baby kicked again, stronger this time.

"We made it," I whispered softly, placing both hands over my belly. "You're safe now. Nobody will ever hurt you again."
