Chapter 6 - The Deposition

The city courthouse was a battleground of cameras, security guards, and eager spectators. The Harrow family trial had become the trial of the decade—a real-life thriller involving murder, poison, corporate greed, and stolen identity.

I walked into the grand courtroom wearing a sharp white suit—a deliberate choice, reclaiming the color they had forced me to wear on the night they tried to end my life. I walked with a slight cane due to my healing spinal injury, but my head was held high.

Across the room sat the defendants behind the mahogany defense table.

Arthur Harrow looked gray, aged ten years in a matter of days, stripped of his hair dye and tailored suits, wearing a dull orange orange jumpsuit. Tessa sat beside him, weeping silently, her hair unwashed, her eyes wide with terror. Blake Sterling looked broken, staring blankly at the polished floor, knowing his wealthy family had completely disowned him to protect their own corporate standing.

The judge slammed his gavel down, demanding silence in the packed room.

"State your name for the record," the prosecutor said, standing beside me at the podium.

"Claire Harrow," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls.

"Ms. Harrow, please tell the court what happened on the night of October 12th."

I looked directly at my father. He tried to hold my gaze with his old, menacing glare, but I didn't flinch.

"On the night of October 12th, my sister, Tessa Harrow, pushed me down twelve hardwood steps at her engagement party," I began, my tone calm, steady, and unshakeable. "She did so under the direction of my father, Arthur Harrow, and with the full cooperation of her fiancé, Blake Sterling. They did this because I was pregnant—a fact they discovered through stolen medical records—and they intended to force a miscarriage to steal my inheritance and cover up a fake pregnancy announcement designed to save a business merger."

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.

"For weeks," I continued, "they systematically fed me synthetic abortion drugs disguised as tea and healthy supplements. When the poison failed to act quickly enough, they resorted to physical violence. They left me bleeding at the bottom of the stairs, laughing, and called my agony a 'joke.'"

The prosecutor turned to the judge. "Your Honor, the prosecution submits into evidence the forensic blood reports, the seized audio recordings, the stolen ultrasound digital logs, and the sworn confession of Eleanor Harrow."

Arthur’s lead attorney stood up, trying to mount a defense. "Your Honor! My client is a respected civic leader! This entire narrative has been embellished by a young woman suffering from severe emotional trauma and physical distress—"

"Sit down, counselor," the judge ordered sharply. "I have listened to the audio recordings provided by the state. I have reviewed the chemical analysis from the state crime lab. The level of premeditated cruelty displayed in these records is frankly horrifying."

The judge turned his attention back to the defense table, his expression stern and unforgiving.

"In light of the extreme severity of the charges—including attempted murder, conspiracy, poisoning, and fraud—and given the substantial financial resources available to the defendants, bail is hereby DENIED for Arthur Harrow, Blake Sterling, and Tessa Harrow. You will remain in custody pending trial."

Tessa let out a piercing shriek as the bailiffs stepped forward to handcuff her. "Father! Do something! You said you would fix this!"

Arthur said nothing. He looked at me as the guards snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists. For the first time in my life, I saw him for what he truly was: not a powerful patriarch, not a mastermind, but a pathetic, cowardly man who had destroyed his own soul for money and control.

As they led them away through the side door, I stood at the podium, placing my hand gently over my belly.

The nightmare was far from over, but the chain had finally been broken.
