Chapter 2 - Tracing the Toxins

The fluorescent lights of the emergency room seemed to hum with a sharp, sickening frequency. My eyes remained glued to the frozen television screen. There was Tessa, glowing in her blush dress, holding Blake’s hand while a clear, crisp ultrasound scan was displayed on the screen behind them. The tiny crescent shape of a life—my life, my baby—was being presented to the city as the heir to the Harrow family legacy.
Dr. Levin held the remote, his face grim. "Look closely at the top left corner of that image, Claire. Do you see those tiny gray alphanumeric characters?"
I leaned forward, my spine screaming in protest, blood rushing to my ears. "It’s faint..."
"That’s a medical machine’s digital watermark," Dr. Levin said quietly. "Every machine in our network tags scans with a unique ID number and a timestamp. That scan was printed from our outpatient radiology lab four days ago. You were brought in for routine bloodwork and a pre-employment physical last week, correct?"
"Yes," I whispered, my voice trembling. "My father required it before I could take my seat on the charitable foundation board."
"Someone at that clinic ordered an abdominal ultrasound under the guise of checking for a suspected kidney cyst," Dr. Levin explained, his jaw tightening. "They knew you were pregnant before you did. And judging by the chemical profile in your blood, someone has been micro-dosing you with a synthetic progesterone blocker mixed into something you consume regularly."
My mind raced through the past month. The daily herbal teas my stepmother, Eleanor, insisted I drink to 'brighten my complexion.' The evening smoothies Blake always offered to blend whenever he visited the estate. The constant, subtle insistence that I was looking 'fatigued' and needed to stay home.
"They didn't just want to push me," I realized, the horror washing over me in cold, icy waves. "They wanted me to lose the baby silently. And when I didn't miscarry fast enough, Tessa pushed me down those stairs to finish it."
"And to ensure that if you did go to the hospital, any bleeding would be blamed entirely on the fall," Dr. Levin added. He turned as the exam room door swung open.
Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit holding a leather portfolio. Detective Sarah Vance looked at me with eyes that had seen too much human cruelty to be easily fooled.
"Ms. Harrow," Vance said, pulling up a chair while her partner stood guard at the door. "Dr. Levin alerted us to a potential felony assault and laced substance administration. Before we take your formal statement, I need to inform you of something. We just pulled the security footage from the Harrow Manor grand staircase during the party."
I held my breath. "What does it show?"
"The angle from the chandelier camera clearly shows Tessa Harrow making deliberate, forceful contact with your back," Detective Vance stated calmly. "It also shows Blake Sterling stepping on your phone as it fell from your hand, crushing the screen, and kicking it under a console table before anyone else reached you."
Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and bitter. "They planned it. All of it."
"We are currently securing a search warrant for the estate," Vance continued. "But given your family's immense wealth and political connections, a warrant will take several hours to execute. Your father’s legal team is already making calls to the precinct, claiming this was a 'tragic domestic accident' caused by your intoxication."
"I don't drink champagne," I said, my voice suddenly growing steady, forged in a furnace of quiet fury. "I haven't had a drop of alcohol in six months. Check my toxicology report. If there was alcohol in my system, it was put there."
Dr. Levin tapped the chart. "Her blood alcohol level is zero point zero. What is present is a high concentration of mifepristone and a heavy sedating antihistamine."
Detective Vance nodded, writing briskly in her notebook. "Claire, if we move on this, it’s going to turn your life into a public battleground. The Harrow name carries enormous weight in this state. Your father, Arthur Harrow, owns three major media outlets. They will attempt to paint you as unstable, jealous, and delusional."
I placed my hand over my stomach. The pain in my back was excruciating, but deep inside me, a tiny heart was still beating. A life they had tried to erase, steal, and claim as their own.
"Let them try," I said softly, looking Detective Vance dead in the eye. "My mother left me thirty percent of the voting shares in Harrow Enterprises when she died. They thought they could strip me of my legacy, my sanity, and my child. I’m done hiding."
"Good," Vance replied with a thin, ruthless smile. "Because we found something else. Dr. Levin isn't the only one who flagged your family's activities. A private investigator hired by your late mother’s estate filed a sealed report three weeks ago. He was killed in a hit-and-run two nights ago."
A chill ran down my spine. The stakes were no longer just about a fall down the stairs or a stolen ultrasound. This was a war for survival, and the people I called family had already drawn blood.
"Nina," I said, turning to my friend who was standing pale against the wall. "Go to my apartment. Take the spare key hidden in the hallway frame. Underneath the loose floorboard in my closet, there is a silver USB drive my mother gave me before she went into the hospital five years ago. Bring it here. Don't tell anyone. Don't even take your own car."
Nina nodded fiercely, grabbing her purse. "I'm on it."

As Nina slipped out of the room, Detective Vance leaned closer. "What's on that drive, Claire?"
"The real reason my stepmother and father were so desperate to secure Tessa’s position," I said, my voice cold as steel. "My mother didn't die of natural causes. And she made sure I would have the proof when the time was right."
