Chapter 7 - The Trial of Broken Ties

I stood in the doorway, staring at Daniel. He looked broken, stripped of the arrogance and ignorance he had carried whenever his mother was involved.
"Come in," I said quietly.
Daniel stepped inside softly, setting the flowers and pastries on the kitchen counter. He looked over at the living room, and his breath caught in his throat.
Lily was standing in her shiny pink cape, twirling around while Sarah held up a mirror. Her new pixie cut was stylish, adorable, and framed her round, rosy cheeks perfectly. She looked resilient, beautiful, and completely vibrant.
Daniel sank against the edge of the kitchen island, tears brimming in his eyes once more. "She looks... she looks like an angel."
"Sarah saved the day," I said, folding my arms across my chest. "Marcus is at the table with the postnuptial agreement and the protective order."
Daniel didn't even look toward the living room table. "Where do I sign?"
"You're not going to read it first?" I asked.
"No," Daniel said, his voice cracking with emotion. He looked straight into my eyes with an intensity I hadn't seen in years. "I don't need to read it. I spent all night sitting in that hotel room watching that video clip on repeat. Every time I heard Lily cry, I realized what a terrible husband and father I have been for letting my mother manipulate me."
He stepped closer, though he kept a respectful distance.
"I went to the precinct at 6:00 AM today, Clara. I gave the detective the full footage. I told them I will testify against Brianna for theft and against my mother for child abuse. My mother called me from her house, screaming, calling you a snake. Do you know what I did?"
I remained silent, watching him.
"I told her that she no longer has a son," Daniel said, tears spilling over his cheeks. "I told her that if she ever comes near my wife or my daughter again, I will personally ensure she spends her remaining years in a state prison. I blocked her number. I cut off the monthly allowance I was sending her. I am done, Clara. Completely done."
Marcus walked over from the dining table, laying the legal documents on the kitchen counter alongside a pen.
Without a single moment of hesitation, Daniel picked up the pen and signed every single line requiring his signature. He gave up all rights to contest the protective orders, agreed to the strict postnuptial financial clauses, and pledged his full support for any legal actions taken against his family.
When he finished, he put the pen down and looked at me, his eyes filled with raw vulnerability.
"I don't expect you to forgive me today, Clara," Daniel whispered. "I know I have to earn back your trust and Lily's trust brick by brick. But please... let me stay and be a father. Let me protect my family."
I looked at the signed documents, then at Daniel. The man standing before me was no longer a boy hiding behind his mother's skirt. He was a father who had finally woken up.

"You can stay," I said softly. "But you sleep in the guest room until I say otherwise."
Daniel let out a long, ragged breath, nodding frantically. "Thank you. Thank you, Clara."
