Chapter 6 - Exposing the Roots

While Sarah set up her portable salon chair in the sunlit corner of the living room, Marcus and I sat at the dining table with stack of legal documents.
"Patricia has been calling my office every thirty minutes since 7:00 AM," Marcus informed me, turning his laptop screen toward me. "She’s terrified. She realized that the camera footage isn't just internal family drama—it's criminal evidence."
"What is she offering?" I asked coldly.
"She offered to sign a full written apology, return all family property, and go to anger management if Daniel drops the police report," Marcus scoffed. "She claims that Brianna manipulated her into believing Lily took the bracelet."
"She’s throwing her own daughter under the bus to save herself," I said, unsurprised. "Classic Patricia."
"Precisely," Marcus nodded. "Brianna, on the other hand, is in deep trouble. She has over $40,000 in credit card debt and gambling obligations. She planned to sell that vintage heirloom to a pawn shop in Decatur. The police located the bracelet in her apartment during a search warrant two hours ago."
I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. The toxicity of that family had been bleeding into my marriage for years, like poison slowly dripping into a well. I had spent three years trying to be the dutiful, patient daughter-in-law, enduring subtle insults about my modest upbringing and my career. I had kept quiet for the sake of peace.
Never again.
"I want a full, permanent restraining order for Lily and myself," I told Marcus firmly. "And if Daniel wants to stay in this marriage, he will sign a postnuptial agreement guaranteeing that his mother and sister will never step foot within a mile of our child, nor receive a single cent of our marital assets."
"Already drafted," Marcus said, pulling a crisp set of papers from his briefcase. "Daniel's attorney called me twenty minutes ago. Daniel told them he will sign whatever you put in front of him without single revision."
Across the room, soft laughter echoed.
I looked up. Sarah was gently snipping away the jagged edges of Lily’s hair, transforming the ruined, hacked-off strands into a breathtaking, chic french pixie cut. She had tucked soft bangs across Lily's forehead, decorating the sides with sparkling silver clips.
Lily was sitting up straight, looking at herself in a small handheld mirror, giggling as Sarah sprayed a light mist of glitter hairspray over her hair.
"Look, Mommy!" Lily squeaked, turning around in the chair. "I look like a fairy!"
My eyes swelled with tears—not of sorrow, but of sheer joy. The ugly, jagged memory of yesterday was being systematically dismantled, strand by strand.
"You look stunning, my little fairy," I said, walking over and kissing her cheek.
The doorbell rang again.
May you like
I walked over and opened it. Daniel was standing in the hallway. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his red eyes, holding a large bouquet of white lilies and a small box of fresh pastries. He looked uncertain, terrified to step across the threshold.
"Clara..." he whispered nervously. "Can I... may I come in?"
