Chapter 5 - The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun broke through the sheer curtains of the Midtown apartment, casting long, warm golden rays across the bedroom.

Lily was still sleeping peacefully, her thumb tucked lightly into her mouth. I quietly slipped out of bed, put on a silk robe, and walked out into the living room.

The apartment was spotless, yet the memory of yesterday hung heavily in the air. I walked to the kitchen island, picked up the paper towel holding the silver scissors, and threw them directly into the trash can.

At 8:30 a.m., the doorbell rang softly.

I walked to the door and looked through the peephole. It wasn't Daniel, nor was it his family. It was a woman with sharp, elegant features, carrying a sleek leather briefcase and a large pink box tied with a satin ribbon.

It was my long-time friend and top-tier family attorney, Marcus Vance, alongside Sarah, a high-end celebrity hairstylist who ran an exclusive private salon in Buckhead.

I opened the door.

"Oh, Clara," Sarah said softly, her eyes filled with deep empathy. She immediately wrapped me in a warm hug. "Marcus told me what happened yesterday. I brought my entire mobile kit and some treats for Lily."

Marcus stepped inside, setting his briefcase on the table. "Good morning, Clara. We have work to do."

"Thank you both for coming so early," I said, pouring them both fresh coffee.

"I reviewed the footage you sent me last night," Marcus said, his tone turning businesslike and severe. "What Patricia and Brianna did constitutes second-degree child cruelty and assault. Furthermore, Brianna stealing that heirloom and framing Lily is grand larceny. Daniel called my office at 2:00 AM demanding we take legal action."

"Is he serious about pressing charges?" I asked, testing the waters.

"He was sobbing on the phone, Clara," Marcus replied honestly. "He gave a full sworn statement to the detective on duty this morning. He cut off all financial support to his sister, revoked his mother’s access to his estate, and signed an emergency protective order against both of them on behalf of Lily."

I took a slow sip of coffee. Hearing that Daniel had actually stepped up to destroy his own mother's leverage gave me a small sense of relief. He wasn't just apologizing; he was swinging the axe.

Just then, a small bedroom door clicked open.

Lily stepped out into the hallway, wearing her pink pajama set, holding her stuffed teddy bear. She looked timidly at the visitors.

Sarah’s face softened instantly. She knelt down on the floor, opening the large pink box she had brought. Inside was a gorgeous set of child-safe glitter hair clips, hair ribbons, and a small pink cape.

"Hi, Lily," Sarah said in a sweet, gentle tone. "My name is Sarah. I heard that a super brave princess lives in this house, and I came all the way here to give her a magical salon morning."

Lily peeked at the glitter clips. "A salon?"

"Yep!" Sarah smiled brightly. "We are going to make you look like the coolest, most stylish princess in the city. Do you want to try on this magical pink cape?"

Lily looked up at me, seeking approval. I nodded with a warm smile. "Go ahead, baby. Sarah is a friend."

Lily slowly walked over to Sarah, stepping into the living room light. As Sarah gently undid the pink tiara headband to inspect Lily's hair, her professional composure faltered for a split second at the sheer destruction Patricia had caused. But she quickly covered it with a bright, confident smile.

"Oh, we can work with this," Sarah said enthusiastically. "You are going to look absolutely stunning!"
