Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

With the legal battle concluded, the toxic weight that had pressed down on my life for years was finally lifted.
I officially took possession of the townhouse Melissa had lived in. Instead of selling it for profit, I sold the property and deposited every single cent into a irrevocable trust fund for my nephew, Tyler. He was placed under the legal guardianship of his father’s responsible sister, away from the toxic influence of his mother. I made sure he would have his college tuition completely covered when he grew up, ensuring he had a chance at a clean, honest life.
I also made big changes to my own career. I resigned from my high-stress corporate executive role, taking a remote position with a flexible schedule at a software foundation. I no longer needed to travel for business trips. I no longer needed to leave my daughter in anyone else's care.
Sophie and I started going to family art therapy together. Week by week, the color returned to her cheeks, and the nightmares began to fade.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, as we were painting in our backyard garden, Sophie looked up at me with yellow paint smudged on her nose.
“Mommy?” she asked.
“Yes, my sweet girl?”
“Are we safe now?”

I put down my paintbrush, pulled her into my lap, and held her against the warm sunshine. “We are totally, completely safe. Forever.”
She smiled, a bright, genuine smile that reached her eyes, and went back to painting flowers on her canvas.
