Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Past

A week after the incident, an unexpected official envelope arrived in the mail. It was a formal legal summons—not from my mother or sister, but from a state probate court.

Attached to it was an unexpected notice: An investigation into grand larceny, fraud, and child endangerment had been officially opened by the District Attorney’s office.

The police report filed by Officer Miller and Officer Vance had triggered an automatic investigation due to the involvement of a minor and the large sum of money involved. The state was taking over the case.

My lawyer, Richard, met me at his downtown office to review the evidence we had gathered.

“Claire,” Richard said, sliding a thick folder across the mahogany desk. “The police financial crimes unit did a deep dive into the accounts Melissa set up. It’s worse than you thought.”

I opened the folder. Inside were detailed transaction histories of the shell account.

“They didn’t just spend the money on luxury goods,” Richard explained. “Melissa was using a portion of the funds to back an illegal gambling ring run by her ex-husband. They were using your mother’s name as a front to wash the money.”

I sat back, stunned. “They were using my money to fund criminal activity... while using my daughter as a bargaining chip?”

“Exactly,” Richard nodded. “And because they filed a false police report against Sophie, the DA is pursuing charges for filing a false emergency report, emotional abuse of a minor, and wire fraud exceeding $500,000 over three years.”

“What happens to the house Melissa is living in?” I asked.

“The eviction notice expires in two weeks. Since the house is entirely under your name and paid off, law enforcement will assist in clearing the property. You have absolute legal control.”

I closed my eyes and breathed a long, deep sigh of relief. For years, I had carried the guilt of believing I wasn't doing enough for my family. I had worked eighty-hour weeks, sacrificing time with my child, thinking I was keeping my mother alive and my sister safe.

The guilt evaporated completely, replaced by a profound, empowering sense of liberation.
