Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Justice

Judge Cho didn't even retire to her chambers to make her decision. She ruled from the bench, her gavel striking the wooden block with a sound like a gunshot.

"This court finds the respondent, Ryan Mercer, to be an immediate danger to the physical and emotional well-being of the minor child, Lily Mercer," Judge Cho declared. "Sole legal and physical custody is hereby awarded to the petitioner, Captain Sarah Mercer."

I closed my eyes, a massive, invisible weight lifting off my chest. I felt Evelyn's hand squeeze my shoulder in triumph.

"Furthermore," Judge Cho continued, "Mr. Mercer’s visitation rights are suspended indefinitely, pending a comprehensive psychological evaluation and the completion of a certified parenting course. Any future visitation, if granted, will be strictly supervised by a court-appointed social worker."

Ryan looked as if he had been physically struck. "But... but my house! What about my support?"

"The marital residence is awarded solely to Captain Mercer," the judge ruled coldly. "Mr. Mercer, you have forty-eight hours to remove any remaining personal belongings under police supervision. You will also pay child support in the amount of twelve hundred dollars a month, and you are ordered to reimburse Captain Mercer for the fifteen thousand dollars of marital funds spent on your extramarital affairs."

Judge Cho looked at me, her expression softening. "Captain Mercer, thank you for your service to our country. I am sorry your sacrifice was met with such betrayal at home. This court stands with you."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, my voice thick with emotion.

As the courtroom cleared, Ryan marched over to our table, his face twisted in rage. "You think you won, Sarah? You think you can live in that house happily after what you did to me? I'll appeal this! I'll make your life a living hell!"

"Ryan," I said, standing up to my full height, looking down at him. "You are nothing to me anymore. You are a ghost. If you ever come near my daughter, or my home again, I won't call a lawyer. I'll call the military police and the local sheriff, and you will spend your Christmas in a jail cell. Now get out of my sight."

He stared at me, seeing the absolute lack of fear in my eyes. For the first time, he realized he had no power over me. He turned on his heel and stormed out of the courtroom, Jessica scurrying behind him like a shadow.

I turned to Evelyn and pulled her into a fierce hug. "Thank you. Thank you for saving my daughter."

"You saved her, Sarah," Evelyn whispered. "You were the one who drove through the storm."
