Chapter 6 - The Counterattack

January brought a brutal cold wave to Colorado, and with it, the opening salvos of our legal war. Ryan’s lawyer, a slick, high-priced attorney named Richard Sterling, filed a countersuit. They were seeking full custody of Lily, child support from me, and the sole ownership of the house.

Their argument was devious: they claimed that my military career made me an unstable, absent mother. They argued that Ryan had been the sole stable provider for the past year, and that my sudden return and "aggressive, military-style eviction" of Ryan had traumatized Lily. They even claimed that I had fabricated the incident on the porch, suggesting that Lily had merely slipped outside for a moment and that I had staged the photo to look like neglect.

"They're going dirty," Evelyn Vance told me during our prep session. "They want to paint you as a cold, career-obsessed soldier who is using her deployment to bully a devoted father."

"I have the photo," I said, my jaw clenched. "I have Marcus’s testimony of her condition when we arrived."

"Marcus is a family friend and your former subordinate; they will try to paint him as biased," Evelyn warned. "We need hard, undeniable evidence. We need to prove Ryan's pattern of behavior. We need to show that his neglect wasn't a one-time accident."

"I'll get it," I said.

I started by requesting the records from Lily’s daycare. When I spoke with the director, Mrs. Gable, she looked uncomfortable but relieved that I was asking.

"Sarah, I'm glad you're here," she said, pulling up her files. "Honestly, we’ve been very concerned over the last six months. Ryan was frequently late picking Lily up. Sometimes by hours. And when he did show up, he was often accompanied by a woman named Jessica. He told us she was her 'aunt' so she could be on the pickup list."

"Did you document these late pickups?" I asked.

"Yes. Every single one. And there were several times Lily came to daycare with unwashed clothes, looking like she hadn't slept. We actually filed an internal report, but since Ryan always had an excuse, we didn't escalate it to Child Protective Services yet. We should have. I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry," I said, taking the certified copies of the records. "This is exactly what I need."

Next, I went after the finances. Because Ryan had control of our joint accounts while I was deployed, I had Evelyn subpoena his bank records. What we found was a trail of absolute betrayal.

Ryan hadn't just been cheating; he had been funding his entire affair with Jessica using my military paychecks. There were charges for expensive dinners, weekend trips to mountain resorts, and even a jewelry purchase—all while Lily’s daycare tuition was consistently paid late, and her pediatrician appointments were missed.

He had been living like a king on my blood, sweat, and tears, while leaving our daughter to be neglected.

"We have them," Evelyn said, looking over the bank statements with a cold smile. "He didn't just cross the line, Sarah. He jumped over it. This is financial fraud and child neglect rolled into one perfect package."
