Chapter 4 - The Legal Ambush

Two days before Christmas, the legal machinery roared to life. Ryan was served with the emergency custody papers and a temporary eviction notice from our marital home, pending a hearing. Because the home was purchased during our marriage using my military housing allowance and VA benefits, Evelyn had filed an emergency petition arguing that Ryan’s neglect of our daughter made the environment unsafe for her, and that I should be granted sole temporary occupancy.
I stood outside our house in the unmarked SUV, accompanied by two sheriff's deputies. Ryan’s truck was in the driveway, parked right next to a sleek red sedan that undoubtedly belonged to Jessica.
Deputy Miller, a burly man with a kind face, nodded at me. "Ready, Captain?"
"Ready," I said.
We walked up the steps—the same steps where Lily had been freezing just forty-eight hours prior. Deputy Miller knocked heavily on the door.
When Ryan opened it, he was in his bathrobe, holding a mug of coffee. His eyes widened in shock when he saw the badges, then darted to me standing right behind them. "What is the meaning of this? Sarah, what are you doing?"
"Ryan Mercer?" Deputy Miller asked. "You’ve been served with an emergency court order. You have one hour to pack a single suitcase of personal belongings and vacate these premises. Temporary custody of Lily Mercer has been awarded to her mother, Sarah Mercer, who is also granted immediate temporary occupancy of this residence."
"What?!" Ryan shrieked, his voice cracking. "This is my house! You can't throw me out! Jessica!"
Jessica appeared at the top of the stairs, wearing one of my silk robes. When she saw the police, her face drained of color.
"She has to leave too," I said, my voice deadpan. "In fact, she can leave first."
"This is ridiculous!" Ryan yelled, stepping toward me. Deputy Miller instantly stepped in front of him, his hand resting casually on his utility belt.
"Keep your distance, sir," Miller warned. "The court order is very clear. If you do not comply within the hour, you will be arrested for trespassing and contempt of court. Furthermore, there is a temporary restraining order in place. You are to remain five hundred feet away from Captain Mercer and Lily Mercer at all times."
Jessica scrambled upstairs to get dressed, while Ryan stood in the hallway, his face turning a furious shade of purple. He glared at me with pure venom. "You think you're so smart, Sarah? You think your little military rank makes you god? I took care of Lily while you were away playing soldier! I'll tell the judge how you abandoned us! I'll drag your name through the mud!"

"You left our daughter in the snow, Ryan," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You don't get to talk about being a parent ever again."
As they packed their bags under the watchful eyes of the deputies, I walked into the living room. The silver star was still crooked on the tree. The stocking with "Jessica" on it was still hanging. I grabbed it, threw it into the fireplace, and watched the glitter burn.
