Chapter 8 - The Final Courtroom Battle

Two months later, the final hearing for our divorce and the corporate liquidation proceedings took place at the County Superior Courthouse.

The courtroom was grand, with high mahogany paneling and tall windows that let in the pale morning light. I sat at the plaintiff’s table alongside Marcus Vance, wearing a tailored navy suit, my hair styled impeccably, holding a leather folder containing the completed, successful schematics for the Riviera Resort project.

Across the aisle sat Ryan.

He looked unrecognizable. He had lost twenty pounds, his suit was visibly oversized and stained at the cuffs, and his hair was thin and unkempt. His private attorney—a cheap public defender he had been forced to hire after his high-priced corporate lawyers withdrew due to unpaid fees—sat next to him, frantically flipping through a stack of disorganized papers.

Judge Helen Montgomery took her seat at the bench, looking down over her half-moon spectacles at the courtroom.

“We are here to finalize the matter of Vance v. Vance, along with the consolidated corporate restructuring claims of Sterling Holdings LLC,” Judge Montgomery announced, her voice filled with authoritative calm. “Mr. Vance, I have reviewed your petition claiming financial duress and requesting a dynamic redistribution of the marital estate.”

Ryan stood up, his voice cracking with desperation. “Your Honor! My wife orchestrated a hostile takeover of my company and my home! She used offshore holding accounts to buy my debt and force me into immediate default! She stripped me of my livelihood, my home, and my dignity! I am asking this court to declare those debt transfers null and void, and to order her to pay me spousal support!”

Judge Montgomery listened silently, her face impassive. When Ryan finished his emotional rant, she turned her eyes to Marcus Vance.

“Counselor?” she asked briefly.

Marcus stood up calmly, buttoning his suit jacket. “Your Honor, all debt assignments executed by Sterling Holdings were entirely legal, fully funded through independent non-marital assets belonging solely to Mrs. Vance’s pre-marital inheritance, and approved by the primary lending institutions. Furthermore, forensic accounting reports submitted to this court demonstrate that Mr. Vance embezzled $154,200 from joint marital accounts over an eighteen-month period to fund personal luxuries for his mistress and unauthorized transfers to his parents.”

Marcus handed a thick, leather-bound financial audit to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

“In light of this clear evidence of marital fraud and intentional asset dissipation,” Marcus continued smoothly, “we request that the court deny all claims for spousal support, ratify the seizure of the residential property under the secured mortgage lien, and enter a final decree of absolute divorce.”

Judge Montgomery spent ten long, silent minutes reviewing the forensic accounting records. The only sound in the courtroom was the slow ticking of the grand clock on the wall and Ryan’s heavy, panicked breathing.

Finally, the judge closed the folder with a sharp snap.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Montgomery began, looking down at my ex-husband with severe eyes. “This court finds your arguments not only entirely without legal merit, but deeply offensive. You attempted to use corporate manipulation to defraud your wife, only to discover that she was legally and financially sharper than you at every turn. You brought this financial ruin upon yourself through arrogance, infidelity, and outright theft.”

She picked up her gavel.

“The court hereby orders as follows: The petition for spousal support is DENIED. The transfer of the residential property and commercial debt to Sterling Holdings is DECLARED FULLY LAWFUL AND VALID. Mr. Vance is ordered to pay full restitution of $154,200 to the plaintiff, to be satisfied through the immediate liquidation of his remaining personal assets.”

The sound of the gavel striking the wooden block echoed through the room like a thunderclap.

“The divorce is hereby finalized,” Judge Montgomery concluded. “Court is adjourned.”
