Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Maya

Three weeks passed. The dust began to settle in the corporate world, but the legal nightmare for Ryan and Maya was only accelerating.
Without a job, a home, or a bank account, Ryan had been forced to move into a tiny, run-down one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city—a place funded entirely by the sale of his luxury watch collection, which was the only personal property the court allowed him to keep.
Maya had expected to be the queen of a grand mansion. Instead, she found herself trapped in a damp, noisy apartment with a broken, broke, and furious man who blamed her for everything that had gone wrong.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I received a private request for a meeting at a quiet café near the university. When I arrived, Maya was already sitting in a corner booth.
She looked entirely different from the woman who had stood in my kitchen wearing my silk robe. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, she wore no makeup, and her hands trembled as she clutched a paper cup of tea.
“Thank you for coming, Claire,” she said softly, unable to meet my eyes.
“You have five minutes, Maya,” I said, sitting down across from her without taking off my coat. “What do you want?”
“I... I want to apologize,” she stammered, tears pooling in her eyes. “Ryan lied to me about everything. He told me you were abusive. He told me you didn’t care about him, that you were keeping all your money to yourself while he suffered. He told me the house was his, and that you were just a squatter taking advantage of him.”
“And you believed him because he was buying you Cartier bracelets with my stolen inheritance,” I noted casually.
“I didn’t know!” she sobbed. “I swear I didn’t know it was stolen! Now the court is suing me for clawbacks! They’re demanding I return every piece of jewelry, every handbag, and every dollar he spent on my apartment rent! I don’t have any money left, Claire! I lost my job at the firm, no other architectural firm will hire me because of the copyright scandal, and my parents have disowned me!”
“Actions have consequences, Maya,” I said smoothly. “You were perfectly happy to participate in the humiliation of another woman when you thought she was powerless. You wore my clothes in my house while my belongings were being packed into trash bags. Did you feel any sympathy for me then?”
Maya swallowed hard, lowering her head in shame. “No... I was selfish. I was greedy. But Ryan is losing his mind, Claire. He drinks every day. He blames me, he shouts at me... I left him yesterday, but I have nowhere to go.”

“You can go back to school, or you can find a job outside of this city,” I said, standing up from the booth. “The lawsuit regarding the gifts Ryan bought you with embezzled funds will not be dropped. You will surrender every item to the bankruptcy trustee. Consider it a very expensive lesson in the cost of taking what belongs to others.”
I turned and walked out of the café, leaving her weeping quietly into her paper cup. I felt no anger toward her anymore. She was simply a minor casualty in the war Ryan had started against his own life.
