Chapter 10 - The Master of My Own Destiny

One year later.

The grand opening gala for the Riviera Resort was held on a crisp Friday evening on the sweeping glass terrace overlooking the ocean. Over five hundred guests—city officials, international investors, famous architects, and journalists—filled the magnificent space.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the glittering reflection of the harbor lights on the dark water. I wore a stunning, floor-length sapphire gown, holding a glass of vintage champagne.

“To the architect of the decade,” Julian said, stepping up beside me and clinking his glass against mine. “The city council just voted to approve our second master plan for the downtown arts district.”

“To building things that last,” I replied with a genuine, quiet smile.

As the music played and guests laughed around us, my eyes briefly drifted toward the entrance of the resort’s public promenade below. A small maintenance crew was clearing away decorative scaffolding from the outer courtyard.

Among the workers in high-visibility vests pushing a heavy cart of drafting equipment was a familiar figure.

Ryan.

He had taken a sub-contracted technical maintenance role with the resort’s facilities management team—the only job he could secure with his ruined reputation and revoked professional license. He was wearing heavy work boots and a dusty jacket, his face lined with stress and hard labor.

For a brief second, as he paused to wipe his brow, he looked up toward the illuminated VIP terrace.

He saw me standing there at the center of the celebration, surrounded by the world’s leading visionaries, holding court in the very landmark I had built from the ashes of his betrayal.

His eyes widened in recognition. He took a half-step forward, his mouth opening as if he wanted to say something across the vast, impossible distance between us.

I didn't turn away. I didn't scowl. I didn't gloat.

I simply looked at him with calm, complete indifference—the total absence of love, hate, or regret. I lifted my champagne glass in a silent, polite toast to the past, turned my back to the window, and walked back into the warmth of my bright, beautiful, and limitless future.
