Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months passed. The winter thawed into a beautiful, vibrant Michigan spring. The snow melted away, replaced by blooming tulips and green grass that breathed new life into Grand Rapids.
The legal battle had been exhausting, but justice was swift. With Marcus's backup tape and the recorded confession, Gwen was convicted of extortion and second-degree murder. She was sentenced to a lengthy prison term, ensuring she would never be able to harm anyone again. The $8,000 was fully recovered and returned to Nora, who used it to pay for her mother’s medical treatments in a top-tier facility.
Liam and Nora decided to leave the small apartment with the tragic balcony behind. They moved out of the city, purchasing a beautiful, small farmhouse with a large front porch in the countryside, surrounded by apple orchards.
It was a place of healing. They spent their weekends painting the walls, planting a massive vegetable garden, and talking. They talked more in those six months than they had in the entire three years of their marriage prior. The trauma had broken them down, but it had also stripped away any walls between them.
One warm May evening, Liam sat on the front porch porch swing, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of pink and gold. Nora walked out, holding two glasses of lemonade, and sat down beside him, resting her head on his shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked, taking his hand.
May you like
Liam smiled, kissing the top of her head. "I was just thinking about how beautiful this place is. And how lucky I am that you gave me a second chance to be the husband you always deserved."
"We both fought for this, Liam," Nora said, looking up at him with eyes full of love. "The cold is gone. We're in the warmth now."
