Chapter 5 - The Night Watchman's Secret

Liam drove down the unpaved, snow-covered road leading into the dense woods outside Petoskey. The headlights of his SUV cut through the falling snow, finally illuminating a small, rustic log cabin with a faint light glowing in the window.

He parked and rushed to the door, knocking loudly.

The door opened slowly, revealing an older man with sharp eyes, holding a heavy flashlight. "Who's there?"

"Are you Marcus?" Liam asked breathlessly. "My name is Liam. My wife, Nora, was here. Is she here?"

Marcus looked at Liam for a long moment, evaluating the desperation in the young man's eyes. Finally, he stepped aside. "She's inside. She collapsed from exhaustion and the cold shortly after she got here. She’s resting by the fire."

Liam pushed past him into the warm cabin. There, curled up on a sofa beneath a heavy wool blanket, was Nora. Her face was pale, her lips chapped, but she was breathing softly. The sight of her alive brought tears to Liam's eyes. He fell to his knees beside the couch, gently taking her hand. It was warm now.

"Nora," he whispered.

Her eyelids fluttered open. When she saw Liam, fear and anger flickered in her eyes, and she tried to pull her hand away. "Liam... what are you doing here? Go back to your sister."

"No, Nora, please listen to me," Liam begged, tears streaming down his cheeks. "I know everything. I found your diary. I know Gwen blackmailed you. I am so, so sorry. I was a fool. I let my sister’s poison blind me, and I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Please, just let me help you."

Nora stared at him, seeing the genuine remorse and agony in his expression. The tension in her shoulders began to ease, though her tears flowed freely. "She was going to ruin Leo's memory, Liam. I couldn't let her do that to my mother."

Marcus walked over, holding two mugs of hot tea. He handed one to Liam and sat in a chair opposite them. "Your wife is a brave woman, son. But she didn't have the whole story. And neither did you."

Liam looked at the old man. "What do you mean?"

Marcus leaned forward. "Three years ago, I was the night watchman. The night Leo died, I saw who got on that boat with him. The police didn't press hard enough because the family of the other person paid to keep things quiet. But I kept a copy of the high-definition backup tape from the secondary camera. I didn't want to get involved back then—I was scared. But when your wife showed up looking like a ghost, begging for the truth, I knew I couldn't keep it hidden anymore."

"Who was on the boat with Leo?" Liam asked, dread pooling in his stomach.

Marcus looked directly into Liam's eyes. "It wasn't a stranger. It was your sister, Gwen. And she wasn't the victim. She was the one who pushed him."
