Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The legal fallout from Elena Rostova’s arrest was swift and comprehensive. Within a week, federal prosecutors had unraveled the full extent of her web of deceit, linking her fake corporate shell accounts to several international laundering rings managed by her father's former associates. The prenuptial agreement she had forced me to sign under false pretenses was declared null and void by a federal judge, and all unauthorized data siphons were scrubbed from our corporate servers before any actual capital transfer could be executed.

With the legal storm behind us, the estate underwent a physical and emotional cleansing.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, Tomás and a team of professional movers arrived to pack up every single belonging Elena had brought into the house. Her designer clothes, her imported cosmetics, and the cold, minimalist decor she had forced upon our living spaces were loaded into large cardboard boxes and hauled away.

"Good riddance," Tomás muttered, standing on the front porch with a clipboard in hand as the moving truck pulled down the driveway. "Corporate compliance ran a full diagnostic on the estate's security network this morning. No residual bugs or backdoors found. Your network is completely secure, sir."

"Thank you, Tomás," I said, clapping him on the shoulder. "For everything. You had my back when I was too blind to see the truth."

"That's what loyalty means, Mr. Ortega," Tomás replied with a rare, approving smile. "You built this company and this family on trust. It was just a matter of reminding you who deserved it."

Inside, the house felt lighter, brighter, and infinitely more spacious. Valeria and Sofía had spent the morning in Marina’s old art studio on the third floor — a room Renata had locked up and labeled a 'dust trap,' but which Camila had quietly kept clean and preserved.

I walked up the grand staircase, my footsteps echoing softly against the polished wood, and paused outside the double doors of the studio. The door was cracked open, and the sound of soft laughter drifted out into the hallway.

I pushed the door open gently.

Valeria was sitting at an easel, dabbing a brush into a palette of bright acrylic paints, while Sofía sat cross-legged on the rug nearby, sketching pictures of her stuffed rabbit alongside a new puppy we had promised to adopt from the local shelter. Camila stood beside Valeria, pointing out a shadow line on the canvas with a gentle, encouraging touch.

They looked up as I entered, a chorus of bright smiles greeting me.

"Dad! Look, I'm painting the garden the way Mom used to do it," Valeria said, stepping back from the easel to show me a vibrant landscape bursting with green grass and golden sunlight.

I walked over, resting my hands on Valeria's shoulders as I gazed at the canvas. It was beautiful — full of life, color, and warmth. Exactly what our home was meant to be.

"Your mother would have been so proud of this," I whispered, my heart swelling with a deep, peaceful joy. "It's magnificent, Val."

"We're going to hang it right in the main foyer," Sofía announced proudly, holding up her sketch of the puppy. "Right where everyone can see it when they walk through the front door."
