Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs Shut

Elena stood over me, her eyes locked onto the ceramic mug in my hands like a hawk watching a field mouse. Every muscle in her body was coiled with tense anticipation, waiting for me to take the first sip of the poisoned brew.

"Drink," she repeated, her voice dropping into a low, hypnotic purr. "Let go of the stress, Arthur. Let it all wash away."

I brought the rim of the mug slowly toward my lips, tilting it just enough to let a tiny wisp of steam curl past my nose. I could see the reflection of her triumphant smile dancing on the dark surface of the liquid.

"You know," I said, my voice unnaturally steady, "it's funny how things work out. For months, you told me I was losing my grip. That my daughters were slipping away from me. That everyone around me was conspiring against my peace of mind."

Elena’s smile flickered, a tiny crease forming between her perfectly arched eyebrows. "What are you talking about, Arthur? You're just tired. Drink your tea before it gets cold."

"And for months, I believed you," I continued, ignoring her prompt. I lowered the mug, setting it down gently on the edge of the mahogany desk without a single drop having passed my lips. "I believed that Camila was poisoning my children's minds. I believed that my daughters were growing cold and distant because of bad influences. I let you isolate me from the only people in this world who genuinely loved me for who I am."

The artificial warmth completely vanished from Elena's face, replaced by a sharp, calculating coldness. She stepped back from the desk, her posture straightening into something rigid and predatory.

"You didn't drink it," she stated, her voice dropping the honeyed facade entirely.

"No," I said, standing up slowly from my chair. "I didn't. And neither did Tomás, nor Camila, nor my daughters."

Elena’s eyes darted toward the hidden bookcase safe, then back to me. For a second, a flash of genuine panic crossed her features, but she quickly masked it behind a harsh, defiant sneer.

"You think you're very clever, don't you?" she spat, her accent hardening into something sharp and foreign — the true voice of Elena Rostova. "A grieving widower playing detective in his own home. It doesn't matter. Even if you figured out the tea, the corporate transfer protocols were initiated three hours ago through an automated proxy server in the Cayman Islands. By morning, your accounts will be frozen, your subsidiary assets liquidated, and your precious company will belong to the Rostov estate."

"Is that right?" a cool voice echoed from the doorway.

Elena whipped around. Camila stood framed in the doorway of the study, her hands folded neatly in front of her apron, her expression utterly serene. Behind her, two federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the study lights.

"Elena Rostova, also known as Renata Vance," Agent Vance announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, international wire fraud, identity theft, and attempted poisoning."

Elena let out a harsh, barking laugh, though her eyes were darting frantically toward the windows and the hidden service panel. "On whose authority? You have no proof! A disgruntled employee and a paranoid businessman playing pretend—"

"We have more than proof, Miss Rostova," Tomás's voice echoed through the room's intercom speakers as he stepped out from the hidden service corridor behind the bookcase, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "We have every keystroke you entered into the corporate server tonight, every threat you made to the children recorded on hidden high-fidelity mics, and a complete financial trail linking your alternate shell accounts directly to your father's liquidated assets."

Elena froze, her face draining of all color. The mask was completely gone now. Beneath the carefully sculpted beauty and the designer clothes lay the bitter, desperate ghost of a vengeful child whose scheme had just imploded around her.

"You ruined my family," she hissed, her gaze locking onto me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "My father died in disgrace because of your company's predatory acquisitions. You took everything from us. I only wanted you to feel what it's like to have everything you love stripped away piece by piece."

"My wife died of an illness, Elena," I said, my voice entirely devoid of anger, carrying only a profound, heavy sorrow. "Your father's company was investigated and indicted by federal authorities years before I ever sat at that executive desk. He made his choices, just as you made yours tonight."

Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Elena firmly by the arm. "Move your hands behind your back. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As they led her away in handcuffs, her heels clicking a sharp, angry rhythm against the hardwood floor until the sound faded down the grand hallway, the heavy weight that had suffocated my home for two long years finally began to lift.
