Chapter 6 - The Turning Point

"Your daughter?" I echoed, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity in the smoke-filled corridor. "Maya. You're Hannah Maya Mercer. Your husband was the lead systems engineer at Vanguard. The truck... it wasn't an accident, was it?"

Hannah paused for a fraction of a second, her back to me, her finger resting lightly on the trigger of her submachine gun. The smoke swirled around her silhouette, casting long, dramatic shadows against the Venetian plaster walls.

"No," she said softly. "It wasn't an accident. Your logistics coordinator miscalculated a transport route, and to cover up a multimillion-dollar shipment of smuggled contraband, your enforcers ran my family off the road. Maya didn't survive."

The weight of my sins came crashing down upon my shoulders with the force of a tectonic plate. Every man I had killed, every brutal order I had given, every life I had casually discarded in the pursuit of absolute power—it had all led to this exact moment. A mother standing in my hallway with a weapon, perfectly justified in putting a bullet between my eyes.

"Do it," I whispered, lowering my pistol and letting it drop heavily to the marble floor. "If you're here for vengeance, take it. I earned this bullet a thousand times over."

Footsteps echoed heavily from the courtyard entrance—Viktor himself had breached the inner foyer, flanked by three heavily armored thugs.

"Well, well, well," Viktor’s gravelly voice sneered through the drifting smoke as he stepped over the bodies of his fallen men, a scar-tangled grin splitting his weathered face. "The great Julian Vance, brought low in his own golden cage. And who's this? A little domestic helper ready to die for a monster?"

Viktor raised his assault rifle, aiming directly at my chest.

In that fraction of a second, when time seemed to stretch into eternity, Hannah didn't hesitate. She didn't look at me with hatred or forgiveness. She looked past Viktor, toward the quiet hallway leading to the children's nursery, where two sleepy, terrified little girls were beginning to wake up.

She raised her weapon with breathtaking speed.

Rat-tat-tat-tat.

A precise, controlled burst cut through the air. Viktor’s men crumpled before they could squeeze their triggers. Viktor staggered back, clutching his shoulder, his weapon clattering uselessly against the floor.

Before Viktor could reach for his backup sidearm, Hannah closed the distance with terrifying grace, sweeping his legs out from under him and driving the butt of her rifle down with bone-crushing force against his wrist.

Viktor roared in pain, pinned to the floor beneath her boot.

"You're done, Viktor," Hannah said, her voice dropping into a cold, terrifying whisper that echoed through the shattered hall. "Turn around, walk out of these gates, and tell the rest of the syndicate that Julian Vance's empire no longer belongs to men of blood."

Viktor, bleeding and broken, glared up at her with terror in his eyes. He knew her. In the underworld, the legend of Hannah Mercer—the ghost engineer seeking retribution against Vanguard and its shadow masters—was whispered with superstitious dread.

"You're... you're the Vanguard ghost," Viktor wheezed.

"I'm a mother," Hannah corrected coldly. "Now get out of my sight before I change my mind."

Viktor didn't need to be told twice. He scrambled backward like a wounded animal, dragging himself out through the shattered courtyard gates into the breaking dawn, abandoning his men and his ambitions forever.
