Chapter 5 - The Siege at Dawn

The front gates of the Manhattan estate exploded with a deafening concussion that shook the reinforced glass windows of the mansion. Shrapnel whistled across the manicured courtyard as automated security turrets whirred to life, returning suppressing fire against an assault team of professional mercenaries clad in tactical black.

I moved through the dim corridors of the subterranean tactical command center, my fingers flying across the console overrides. Monitors flashed red as perimeter sensors went offline one by one.

"Status, Marcus!" I barked into the comms headset.

"They've breached the outer courtyard, Boss!" Marcus shouted over the staccato roar of automatic gunfire echoing from the security pavilion. "Viktor brought heavy ordnance—anti-materiel charges. They're trying to breach the west wing gallery!"

The west wing gallery.

My blood ran cold. That corridor led directly to the sunroom.

To the children's nursery.

"Fall back to the central corridor! Protect the inner stairwell!" I ordered, drawing my custom-engraved Sig Sauer P226 from its holster under my tailored jacket.

For years, I had trained for this. I had orchestrated hits, dismantled syndicates, and outmanneveled the FBI. But tonight, the battlefield wasn't a neutral warehouse in Queens or an abandoned dock in Brooklyn. It was my home. Every shattered pane of glass, every charred wall, was a direct threat to the fragile new world I had only just begun to build with Claire and Lily.

I burst out of the command hub into the main hallway just as a heavy oak double door splintered inward under the impact of a breaching charge. Smoke billowed into the foyer, smelling of cordite and burning wool.

Two of Viktor’s elite enforcers stepped through the smoke, assault rifles raised.

They didn't even have time to acquire their targets.

Two crisp, controlled cracks echoed through the foyer. Both men dropped instantly, neutralizing threats with clinical efficiency.

I lowered my pistol, turning around sharply.

Standing ten paces behind me, holding a suppressed Heckler & Koch MP5 with the steady posture of a former military operative, was Hannah Mercer. She wore a dark tactical vest over her simple maid's uniform, her expression as calm and detached as if she were folding laundry.

"You missed your left shoulder angle on the second shooter," Hannah said coolly, ejecting a spent casing. "In close quarters, always clear the blind spot."

I stared at her, my mind spinning on a axis of pure disbelief. "Who the hell are you?"

"Someone who knows that Viktor doesn't negotiate, Julian," she replied, stepping past me toward the west wing. "And someone who isn't going to let anyone destroy the home my daughter's physical therapist finally helped build."
