Chapter 9 - Justice in the Courtroom
Three weeks later, the gray skies of Seattle parted over the King County Family Courthouse, casting bright afternoon light through the tall arched windows of Courtroom 4B.
Brielle sat at the petitioner’s table, her posture straight and composed in a sharp navy blazer she had purchased with her very first supervisor paycheck. Beside her sat legal counsel provided pro bono by Everett Calloway’s corporate legal division—a brilliant family law specialist named Jonathan Vance (no relation to Marcus, much to Eleanor’s disgust).
Across the aisle sat Marcus Vance and his mother, Eleanor, looking significantly less confident than they had outside the restaurant weeks ago.
When the judge entered, everyone rose.
“Please be seated,” Judge Alvarez said, adjusting his glasses as he scanned the thick file resting on his desk. “We are here today to review the emergency custody petition filed by Mr. Marcus Vance and Mrs. Eleanor Vance, as well as the counter-petition for sole legal custody and supervised visitation filed by Ms. Brielle Dawson.”
Judge Alvarez looked up, his gaze sweeping over the courtroom before landing on Marcus.
“Mr. Vance, your petition alleges that the mother is chronically unstable and financially incapable of providing a safe environment for the child. However, the court has received a comprehensive addendum from the employer of record at Harbor & Ash, along with certified financial audits and character affidavits.”
The judge paused, picking up a heavy document bearing the embossed seal of Calloway Enterprises.
“Furthermore, the court has noted that your child support payments have been in severe arrears for over five months, and that your living arrangements consist of a shared apartment whose lease was terminated for non-payment two weeks ago.”
Marcus’s face turned pale. He glanced nervously at his mother, who was glaring daggers at the ceiling.
“Additionally,” Judge Alvarez continued, his voice hardening, “the court has reviewed the security footage and staff affidavits concerning the incident on May 12th, where you and your mother attempted to harass an employee inside a commercial establishment under false pretenses.”
Judge Alvarez slammed his gavel down once, the sound echoing sharply through the quiet courtroom.

“The petition for custody by Mr. Marcus and Eleanor Vance is dismissed with prejudice. Full legal and physical custody is granted exclusively to Ms. Brielle Dawson. Mr. Vance’s visitation rights shall be strictly supervised and contingent upon the immediate payment of all back child support.”
Brielle let out a breath she felt she had been holding for years. Tears of pure relief welled in her eyes as her attorney placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. Across the room, Marcus slumped back in his chair in defeated silence, while Eleanor hissed insults under her breath before storming out of the courtroom.
