Chapter 6 - The Unraveling TruthFour hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, sunny morning.

I sat in a private, high-security room at the University Medical Center. Claire was resting in the hospital bed, her color slowly returning, an IV line still attached but her eyes bright with tears of relief. Beside her bed stood two pristine hospital bassinets.

Lily lay in the left one, wrapped in a pink blanket. Noah lay in the right, wrapped in blue.

I sat between them, holding Claire's hand with one of mine, and gently resting my other hand over Noah's tiny chest.

Marcus walked into the room, carrying a thick folder and two cups of coffee. He handed one to me and stood at the foot of the bed.

"Julian Vance and your mother are in federal custody," Marcus said quietly. "They're being charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, medical fraud, bribery, and illegal conspiracy. Dr. Hayes is cooperating fully with the District Attorney in exchange for immunity from prosecution."

Claire took a deep breath. "What about... what about the DNA tests, Marcus? Did the state lab run them?"

Marcus looked at me, then at Claire. He pulled a sealed envelope from the folder. "The lab rushed the panel per the federal court order. The results came back twenty minutes ago."

My heart hammered against my ribs again. Even though I had resolved in my heart to love both children no matter what the biological truth was, the lingering question burned like fire in my soul. Who was Noah? Was he Julian's son? Was he my father's bizarre posthumous clone? Or was he mine?

"Do you want me to read it?" Marcus asked softly.

I looked at Claire. She nodded, her tears overflowing. "Read it, Marcus. We need the truth. No more secrets. Ever."

Marcus broke the seal and opened the paper. He read through the dense genetic terminology before stopping, a faint smile touching his lips.

"Well," Marcus said, looking up. "It turns out your mother and Julian Vance were not as smart as they thought they were."

"What do you mean?" I asked, leaning forward.

"The embryologist whom Evelyn bribed at the clinic... he took her money," Marcus explained. "He accepted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bribe from Evelyn to swap the second embryo with the one created from Julian's line."

"And?" Claire gasped.

"And the embryologist had a conscience," Marcus revealed. "Or he was terrified of going to prison for the rest of his life. He took Evelyn's money, put it in an escrow account, and then... he didn't perform the swap."

Claire gasped, clutching her chest. "He didn't?"

"No," Marcus smiled. "He used the second viable embryo that was produced during your third IVF cycle—the one the clinic had mislabeled as unviable due to a clerical error. He transferred both of your biological embryos."

I stared at Marcus, speechlessness washing over me. "So... Noah..."

"Noah is 100% your biological son, Ethan," Marcus said firmly. "And Lily is 100% your biological daughter. You and Claire are the full, undisputed genetic parents of both twins. They are natural fraternal twins from your own IVF cycle."

Claire let out a loud, shuddering sob and buried her face in her hands. I fell forward onto my knees beside her bed, burying my face in the blanket next to her, tears pouring uncontrollably from my eyes.

"They're ours," Claire wept, reaching down to stroke my hair. "Ethan... they're both ours! They were always ours!"

"They were always ours," I repeated, my chest heaving with overwhelming relief and joy.
