Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Legacy

I stared at Dr. Hayes, my mind racing to process the words. "Engineered? Heteropaternal... what?"

"Superfecundation," Dr. Hayes explained softly, pulling up a chair and sitting across from me while Claire clutched my hand with a desperate, iron grip. "It occurs when two separate eggs are fertilized by sperm from two different men during the same ovulation cycle. Usually, it happens naturally through multiple sexual encounters. But in a laboratory setting... during IVF..."

"We only had one viable embryo left," I said, my voice shaking as I remembered the agonizing phone call seven months ago. "You told us the third IVF cycle produced only one grade-A embryo. We transferred it. How could there be two babies?"

Claire choked back a sob. "Ethan... your mother came to me before the final transfer. You were at work."

I turned my gaze to my wife, my stomach twisting into knots. "What did she say to you, Claire?"

"She brought her lawyers," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "She brought documents from the Bennett Family Trust—the trust your late father established before he died. The trust that holds your family's entire real estate empire, worth hundreds of millions of dollars."

I knew about the trust. My father, Richard Bennett, had been a ruthless corporate titan. When he died five years ago, his will stipulated that the entirety of the ancestral holdings and controlling shares of Bennett Global would remain in an irrevocable trust managed by my mother, Evelyn, until an heir—a male biological descendant—turned twenty-one. If I failed to produce a biological male heir before my forty-fifth birthday, the entire estate would default to my father's estranged, predatory stepbrother, Julian Vance, and his corporate entity.

"Your mother was desperate," Dr. Hayes took over the explanation. "Your third round of IVF was failing. The single embryo you produced—the one transferred—was female. Lily."

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. "Lily was our embryo? The girl?"

"Yes," Claire sobbed. "Lily is 100% yours and mine. But... but Evelyn knew that if you only had a daughter, Julian Vance would contest the trust wording. The original charter specified a male heir to carry the family surname into the next corporate generation. Your mother told me that if I didn't agree to her plan, she would use her power as sole executor to bankrupt us, cut off your medical insurance, and ensure we could never afford another attempt at parenthood anywhere in the country."

"She blackmailed you?" I asked, horror dawning on me. "With our dream of having a family?"

"She did more than blackmail her, Ethan," Dr. Hayes said quietly, looking ashamed. "Evelyn bribed the head of our laboratory embryology team. Without your knowledge or consent, during the transfer procedure, they implanted a second embryo alongside Lily."

I felt the air leave my lungs. "Where did the second embryo come from?"

Claire squeezed her eyes shut, fresh tears streaming down her face. "It was created using a donor egg... and sperm from your late father that he had cryogenically preserved decades ago before his vasectomy, or..." She couldn't finish the sentence.

"Or what, Laura?" I demanded, turning to the doctor.

"Or sperm from Julian Vance himself," Dr. Hayes dropped the bomb. "Your mother paid Julian behind your back. Julian wanted a stake in the trust. Evelyn made a secret deal with him: if she implanted an embryo derived from his line or your father's old sample alongside your daughter, Julian would sign away his right to challenge the trust charter. The second baby—Noah—was engineered to secure the corporate inheritance."

I stood up so fast my chair clattered to the floor. "You implanted another man's genetic material into my wife without my consent? You committed a federal crime in this hospital!"

"I didn't participate in the laboratory swap!" Dr. Hayes pleaded, raising her hands. "I only found out six weeks ago when I reviewed the blood markers during a routine high-risk ultrasound! I confronted Evelyn, but she threatened to destroy my medical license, my clinic, and prosecute Claire for contract fraud! Claire didn't know which baby was yours because Evelyn refused to tell her whether the second embryo belonged to your father, Julian, or an anonymous donor until the birth!"

"That's why she said 'I don't know,'" I whispered, looking down at Claire. "When I asked who the father was... you literally didn't know."

"I was so scared, Ethan," Claire wept, reaching up to touch my face. "She told me if I said anything to you before the birth, she would make sure the court deemed me mentally unfit and take both babies away the moment they were delivered. I tried to tell you... I tried to hint at it... but I was so terrified of losing them."

"And now she's taken them anyway," I said, a dark, cold clarity washing over the violent storm of anger in my chest.

The anger at Claire began to evaporate, replaced by a searing, protective rage against my mother. Claire hadn't betrayed me out of lust or malice; she had been trapped in a web spun by a sociopathic matriarch who viewed human life as nothing more than bargaining chips on a corporate balance sheet.

"Where is she taking them, Claire?" I asked softly, kneeling back down and kissing her forehead. "Tell me about the island."

"The private estate off the coast of Maine," Claire said, wiping her nose. "Evelyn has a private airstrip twenty minutes from here. She has a medical team waiting at her compound. She plans to perform private DNA testing there, keep the male heir to raise under her absolute control, and... and dispose of Lily through a black-market adoption network so there are no loose ends to threaten the legacy."

"She's going to throw our daughter away," I growled, standing up. "Over my dead body."
