Chapter 2 - Disappearance in the Dark

The nurse’s words hung in the sterile hospital corridor like frost on glass.
"What do you mean, security is checking the cameras?" I demanded, my voice cracking under the weight of sheer exhaustion and terror. "Where are my babies?"
"Mr. Bennett, please calm down," she whispered, looking nervously over her shoulder toward the quiet wing of the maternity ward. "When the shift change occurred twenty minutes ago, the night nurse went to check on the twins in the private nursery bay. The bassinets were empty."
The floor beneath me felt as though it had completely dissolved. "Empty? What do you mean empty? You have security at every door! You told me two officers were guarding that room!"
"They were called away to an emergency in the lobby—a disruption caused by a woman claiming to be a relative," the nurse stammered, her face draining of color. "By the time they returned, the nursery door was unlocked, and the infants were gone."
My mother.
The gray coat. The disposable hospital cap she had been wearing before she even stepped foot into the delivery room. She hadn't come to comfort us; she had come prepared to walk through a hospital without drawing attention.
"Don't let her take them," Claire had whispered before being wheeled into surgery. She hadn't been talking about a stranger or a corrupted doctor. She had been talking about Evelyn Bennett, my mother.
I didn't wait for the nurse to offer more platitudes. I bolted down the hall toward the security station near the east wing elevators. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Seven years of heartbreak, hundreds of hormonal injections, weeping on the kitchen floor over bloodied pregnancy tests, three devastating miscarriages—and now, the very morning my children were born, they had vanished into thin air.
When I rounded the corner, two hospital guards were huddled around a monitor with the chief of security. On the screen, a grainy black-and-white feed showed the rear service exit near the loading docks. A woman in a long gray coat, her head covered by a dark scarf, was hurrying toward a silver sedan. In her arms, she carried two insulated medical transport carriers—the kind used for transfer between facilities.
"That's her," I shouted, lunging forward and pointing at the screen. "That's my mother! Stop her!"
"Sir, the footage is from six minutes ago," the chief said, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder to keep me upright. "We've already dispatched the local police, and an AMBER Alert is being drafted right now. Do you have any idea where she would take them?"
"I don't know," I breathed, clutching my head as tears finally spilled over. "I don't even know what's real anymore. My wife told me one of the babies isn't mine, my mother was in on it, and the medical staff didn't look surprised! What is happening?"
The chief exchange a grim look with his subordinate. "Mr. Bennett, you need to sit down. The police detectives are on their way to question you and Dr. Hayes."
"Dr. Hayes?" I snapped, the doctor's calm demeanor during Claire's hemorrhage flashing back in my mind. "Where is Dr. Hayes?"
"She's still in the recovery suite, supervising your wife's post-operative care."
I turned on my heel and marched straight back to the surgical wing, ignoring the guard who called out after me. I slammed through the double doors of the recovery room.
Claire lay on the bed, pale as alabaster, an IV line dripping fluid into her arm. Beside her stood Dr. Laura Hayes, quietly reviewing a chart. She didn't flinch when I slammed the door shut.
"Where are my children, Laura?" I asked, dropping the formal 'Doctor.' We had known Laura for three years. She was the specialist who had finally given us hope when every other fertility clinic turned us away. "What did you and my mother do?"
Dr. Hayes set the chart down slowly. Her face was haggard, lines of guilt etched deep around her mouth. "Ethan... I am so deeply sorry. I wanted to tell you. I tried to convince Evelyn and Claire that this secrecy would destroy you, but legal non-disclosure agreements bound my hands."
"Legal non-disclosure agreements?" I stepped closer, my hands trembling violently. "My mother kidnapped my newborn twins six minutes ago! You tell me what is going on right now, or I swear to God I will dismantle this clinic brick by brick!"
"Ethan..." A faint, raspy voice came from the bed.
I turned. Claire’s eyes were half-open, clouded with pain and anesthesia, but fixed on me.
"Claire," I knelt by her bedside, taking her ice-cold hand in mine, torn between furious betrayal and desperate love. "Claire, please. You have to tell me. Evelyn took the babies. They're gone."
Claire’s eyes widened in horror, a single tear cutting through the dried sweat on her cheek. "No... no, Ethan, you can't let her... she has the estate... she's taking them to the island."
"What island? Why would she take them? Whose baby is Noah? Or Lily? Claire, answer me!"
Claire swallowed hard, her throat dry. "They're both... yours, Ethan. But... one of them isn't only yours."

Her words made no sense. "What are you talking about? That's biologically impossible!"
Dr. Hayes stepped forward, placing a hand on my shoulder. "It isn't impossible, Ethan. It's an extraordinarily rare phenomenon called heteropaternal superfecundation—combined with a secondary genetic chimera protocol. But in your case... it wasn't an accident. It was engineered by your mother's trust."
