Chapter 5 - The Sweetest Reunion

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She threw off the blanket, scrambled out of bed, and dashed down the hallway toward the living room.

There, standing in the center of the room next to a social worker holding a clipboard, was seven-year-old Sophia. Her hair was slightly messy, and she was clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit so tightly her knuckles were white. For a second, the little girl froze, wide-eyed, taking in the sight of her mother standing safely in her grandfather’s house.

“Sophia!” Emily sobbed, dropping to her knees with open arms.

The little girl let out a joyful cry and ran across the room, launching herself directly into her mother’s embrace. They collapsed onto the soft living room rug, holding onto each other so tightly it seemed as though they were afraid the other might vanish like mist.

“Mommy, I missed you so much! Daddy said you went away and didn't want to see me anymore!” Sophia cried into Emily’s shoulder, her tiny body shaking with pent-up emotion.

“I would never leave you, my sweet angel, never,” Emily kissed her forehead, her tears streaming down onto Sophia’s cheeks. “Mommy loves you more than anything in the entire world.”

David stood a few paces away, watching the mother and daughter embrace. For the first time in over a decade, the hardened, analytical investigator felt a deep, overwhelming peace settle into his soul. He had spent his entire professional life putting away monsters, but this—saving his own flesh and blood—was his greatest victory.

The social worker cleared her throat gently, offering a kind, professional smile. “Ms. Vance, all emergency custody restrictions have been officially lifted by Family Court Judge Henderson, acting upon the federal corruption evidence provided by your father. Full, permanent custody has been restored to you, effective immediately. Ryan Vance is facing multiple federal indictments and will not be seeing your daughter anytime soon.”

Emily looked up from Sophia, wiping her tears, and nodded gratefully to the social worker and then to her father. The nightmare was officially over, and the healing could finally begin.
